I installed a Pioneer stereo in my 74 last month. Worked fine for a couple of weeks. One day when I started the car the stereo came on but no sound out of any of the 4 speakers. I checked all the settings but no go. The stereo would power on, CD would spin but no sound. So I returned it and got a new one today. Guess what ... I plug it in and still no sound - used the original wiring harness. It has two power leads ... switched and non-switched. I figure the non-switched is just the memory and the switched is the power. What has be puzzled is that I have had two stereos that power on but no sound out of any speaker ... any ideas?
RCA's faulty? dunno if you have an amp. Also, yes electronics can be bad out of the box and sometimes several boxes in a row. Also are you sure you dont have a speaker lead grounding out?? I used to do this stuff years and years ago I have forgotten much, but hope maybe this helps. Dan
You have to be careful about using the original harness to wire up a new stereo. The old factory stereos grounded the negative side of the speaker sometimes through a fader, sometimes not. Sometimes all the speakers - terminals were connected together. The new Class D digital amps have differential outputs so each speaker's + and - leads need to go to the stereo and connect to the correct wire. Old stereos only needed 3 speaker wires, Right channel, Left channel, and Ground. New Class D amps generally have 8 speaker wires, 2 each for Rear Left, Rear Right, Front Left and Front Right.
i had this same problem but i didnt use the stock harness and the problem was a power wire that disconnected at a crimp i rewired it and it worked fine until an extra wire that i didnt need(i think it was power antenna) grounded to the body and shorted the stereo, replaced stereo and havent had ne problems
Anyone know why when you start the car you can hear a buzzing/clicking in the radio? Almost like interference comeing from the points or something. The radio is hooked to the stock power wire that the original factory radio was hooked to. When I pulled the old radio out it had a metal thing with a coil of wire in it and yellow tape wrapped around the wire, that was hooked into the power wire. I figgured it was just some usless junk someone put in over the years and tossed it aside. Now the radio has a buzz in it, thinking maybe I should hook the yellow thing back in. Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread.
There was a noise suppressor (capacitor) hooked to the wiring harness at the voltage regulator just for that. Bet yours is missing.
Do you use original speakers??? But with a new radio you should pass all new wire, speakers, alimentation, ground. After your sure it's not your problem
Dan, It may be the type of music you are listening to. My sterio won't play anything but metal. It is probably something simple like the fader. You probably hit a button for an aux. Start from the beginning and read the directions on how to use the sterio. Since you are on your second sterio it may be a long shot but it is still possible. It may be the connection with the factory wiring harnass. Did you splice wires or get a harness adapter from someone like Crutchfield?
It happend a couple of days after installing the new front speakers. I am thinking some fell off and is grounding out. I'll try to pull it all apart this weekend and see.
I'd look for a pinched wire to the fronts you just installed. If pinched thru the insulation-instant dead short. Been there, done that. Everything works fine at first, then a little while later, nothing works. Sometimes it doesn't take much pressure to cut insulation, some of it is softer than others. May need to route the wires to a differnt location, they may just be rubbing part time enough to damage them. Just my
