I've been having some problems with my charging system on my 71 maverick and i cant figure out what it is. I recently rebuilt the motor and when i put it back in and hooked the alt. and voltage regulator back my alt light comes on and the battery isnt being charged. I didnt have this problem before i took the motor out. Ive replaced the alternator and the voltage regulator, hooked up all the wires the way they came off; to the best of my knowledge, and checked all the wires to see if they had continuity and they're fine. Does any one have any advice/tips or a wiring diagram that would help me figure this out?

are you sure its not charging... have you hooked a volt meter to the battery to see if it really isn't charging?

you can't trust what the dash board lights are telling you.

just one thought to know for sure that it is not charging.

Easiest solution....GM 7127SE, but youll have to drill the bottom mounting hole out one size bigger. It requires 1 10Ga wire from the alt to the battery side of the starter relay. This a eliminates a mess of wiring. Also if you go there, keep in mind that you have to touch the throttle before the alt will turn itself on when you first start the engine.

The voltage regulator needs a good ground. If it dosent have it, you will fry it in about 3 seconds. From the factory, the negitive cable went from the battery post, to the voltage regulator base, and then on to the block. Most times when cables are replaced, the regulator ground is omitted. This can cause all kinds of problems. I always run a 10ga wire from the batter post to the regulator base.
