I have a 74 car with a column shift automatic. Id like to put a floor shifter in it. I ve seen that the early cars have removable tunnels, but without crawling under it or pulling up the carpet, Im pretty sure mine dosent. Anybody know which years had removable tunnels and which didnt? Im not looking fwd to cutting a hole in my floor but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. Has anyone done it? Also, does anyone out there have a nice factory shifter for sale?
is the piece youre talking about a large part of the tunnel? I dont think my car even has a plate there to take off??
You don''t need that plate. Just cut a hole of the correct size and location, drill 4 bolt holes, and mount the shifter. You can make a plate if you want extra reinforcment...
Chris you putting a stock floor shifter in? get the muffers in yet? i see your not worried about smog anymore
Im going for it!! Thanks for the pic, now I see what has to be done. Mufflers are on, shoddy work, car is going back, will they correct it? wish me luck....
Or you can call The Maverick Connection. I usually have these tunnel pieces available. You can cut your own hole and not use them, but you'd better measure well if you intend to use a stock shifter. If you use an aftermarket cable shifter, it doesn't matter - you can mount it in the backseat and let the kids shift for you. Then they won't need their Gameboy...
Do you have one now? How much with shipping to 91762, also need the linkage....Also, as my memory serves me the Maverick shifters had a straight handle and the Mustangs had a bend in them, is this correct, or did they all have the bend?
I have the factory tunnels for $50.00 each, which is cheap considering how hard to find they're getting. I'm out of factory linkages, though. I have some factory floor shifters for $75.00, including the factory handles. The Maverick handles were the sexy curved ones, while the Mustang ones were the ugly, fat-looking straighter ones, generally with a button on each side. The Maverick handles only have one button. I cannot ship either of these until after May 17 though.
I measured and cut mine...turned out excellent. There wasn't any "removable" plate or anything like that (it's a '73). I installed a stock floor-shifter...
there's several inches of adjustability in the shifter linkage too, so the hole does not have to be exact. I'm going to move mine back farther because the shifter is too far forward for my taste.
True, there is some adjustability in the linkage rod. Without using the factory floor plate, you also miss the factory reinforced shifter hole too. Maybe not a real big deal, but it makes it sturdier. If you take up your carpet, you can see the factory dimples in the floor pan put there to mark where the bolt-on floor plate mounts. It's hard to know where to look, though, without having one of the factory plates to use as a guide. They are there, though.
If I remember right, I used the dimples to drill my holes. This was 14 years ago. Not to change the subject, but I remember calling you, Chuck, back around '89 or so. I got your number out of Hemmings Motor News. Man, that was years ago. It's great to see you're still around and participating here...
