    strange noises?

My car makes a clapping noise when in park or neutral, but only when warmed up. it doesn't do it in gear and when cold. it's a pulsating noise like clapping metal noise. what confuses me the most is when I get out of my car and push the car backwards... the noise stops as soon as I get resistance from the car being in park. any ideas? the more resistance I get when pushing the car in park the less noise I hear. any ideas?

btw the noise sounds like it's coming from the back or bottom of the engine. not really sure though

Nick; the car is not going all the way into park. You need a linkage adjustment.

btw is this the adjustment done when a b&m shifter would have been installed? because I replaced mine some time ago and I think I know how to adjust it if that's all it is? it's where the line actually attaches to the transmission right? and if so why does it do this only when the car is warmed up? sorry for all the questions and thanks for any help:)

Nick; just put the shifter in park, then adjust the cable so that the shift arm on the trans is all the way back, and into park all the way. Then, put the car in neutral, and see that the shift arm is in neutral. That should be it for a cable shifter. If it still won't go into park, you may have to drop the valve body and adjust it inside. A real pita. Best to let a trans shop do it if you don't know how. Let us know!

You could also have a cracked flexplate

well I checked my linkage and it seems fine. my engine has a lot of bouncing going on in park and i"m thinking it might be that the transmission has become loose where mounted to the engine. I think that might have caused a cracked flexplate? anyone know how much something like that is gonna cost? ugh I don't even want to think about it.

ok so I took my car in today to the mechanic. the seals on the tranny needed to be replaced anyways. he said he wasn't sure if the leak was all tranny fluid or if there was some engine fluid in there also. says the noise sounds more like engine knock to him. but I never hear it in gear or when driving. and when in park if I push on the car it goes away. he said I probably have either bad crankshaft bearings or a bad torque converter. he hasn't pulled the tranny yet so ugh... sounds like either way somethings gonna have to get rebuilt:( I was just about to get it painted too after years of waiting:(

it's a 302. and the reason I think it's in the tranny is because if I get out of the car and push it while it's in park the noise goes away when I get some resistance. they're going to pull the tranny tomorrow... I think it's gonna be getting a rebuild. oh well... there goes that new paint job I had just saved up for
