Anyone have an idea of what it would cost to have power steering installed? (The manual steering takes it toll on me because of surgery that compromised my muscles.) I would have to take it to a mechanic so I'm looking for a price range of what it would cost.

I'm looking at having to get another car if I can't do something about the steering. My brother put a lot of money into it to get the mechanical part fixed before he gave it to me and I really hate to have to sell it.

To convert the car to power steering you will need the following:

    1) Power steering pump, hoses, and pump bracket
    2) Control Valve and Cylinder
    3) Center Link
    4) Gearbox

I'm not sure, but you might be able to use the manual gearbox if the pitman arm is changed. Perhaps someone else could answer that question.
    Good Luck!

Thanks for the information on the parts!

Any ideas of what it cost for a mechanic to put power steering in?

It would probably take a couple of hours to convert from manual to power if you had everything you need. So I would say a mechanic would probably charge you for 4 hours labor. More if he has to remove the components from the doner car. Just a guess.

Plus the cost of an alignment.

Thank you for the link. Any ideas of what all the parts are worth?

Thank you for all of the help! Our mechanic said it would cost around $400 (estimate) if I get the parts. Does that sound about right?

    Thanks again!

If you weren't so far away, I am south of Houston, I would swap out my power system for your manual. But I would hate to have to drive 2000 miles for that one last piece I forgot to take off of mine to put on yours...

Of course, if you would like to drive it down to Houston and camp out for a week, I would be glad to swap. Though it might cost you more than $400 just for the drive.

LOL! I wouldn't mind a trip to Houston, unfortunately, it's not in the bank account right now!
