Can anyone tell me for sure whether it's the top or bottom control arm I have to swap to change out the front drum brakes on my '70 Mav? I'm swapping with a '77 Mav as the disk brake donor. I know I have to change the master cylinder and proportioning valve, too. Reason I'm asking is that if I have to swap the top arms, I need a spring compressor; If I have to swap the bottoms, I'm just going to take off the spindles, disks, and control arms as an assembly, so I don't have to open the ball joints. At least, it looks like it can be done that way...
swap If you are going to do the swap, there is no need to change the A-arm it is a direct bolt in pop the upper and lower ball joints out, unhook the brake line off the frame rail set the disc brake spindle in place, reattach ball joints and brake lines, then change out your praportioning valve and m/c.
Thanks, that's pretty much how I did the swap. The top ball joints were new on the '70, so I used them. Then I discovered the lower ball joints were new on the '77, so I swapped the lower control arms. Also robbed new tie rod ends from the '77. Now I just have to finish the brakes and get it aligned, then I start on the rear.
