I've now got my 5.0 motor (finally ) for my 72. It's got also, ported e7's going on, a weiand stealth, and a c4. I've got an air compressor, a house/garage (corona), and of course an engine hoist. I'm looking for motivation, and a hand, as I've talked with a lot of you guys at the shows at knotts. I'll buy the beer, and someone can have my old 72 302 engine for free
if i were closer i'd run over and give you a hand. course my boss might not like it since i've been on disability since march 2.
why am i the only person in tucson that loves working on cars....everyone i ask says..oh um.l...yeah ..umm...i cant...umm. i love working on cars and i just need some competant help....lol.... good luck if i was in so cal..i would be there in a heart beat
damn. Looks like this may be a solo project. It's just difficult, as I'm in the process of putting a gt40 headed engine into my mustang too. I'd love to go efi, but for simplicity sake, probably will save that for a future project. here is a bump
Hey, I just got back from vacation and saw your post regarding free beer. Did you do the swap yet? I may be able to help. It would be good to know someone that I could help sometimes and also get help from. I'll be doing the engine stuff too. I'm a little bit far (Oceanside), probably about an hour or so away, but not too bad. I'd also like to see your heads. I just bought some E7's for $10 to mess around with porting.
No, I haven't done it yet. An hour isn't too far. my current plans: weekend of june 11/12th, drop in my gt40p headed explorer engine into my 5.0, then I'm free after that for the mav. I'd love to meet another mav guy and finally get this wrenching. If you're serious, we can set a date. I'll try and have all the hardware disconnected already on the old drivetrain so we can yank and swap
Erick, thanks so much for the motivation!!! before I set a date, I've got to figure out what I have and what I don't. Here is what I DO have. -86 (rebuilt recently) HO roller longblock. -ported e7's for that longblock -weiand stealth intake -couple of old holleys that can be rebuilt -50 oz 157 tooth flexplate for the existing c4 behind the old 302 in the car now. extra pan and pickup tube. Here is what I am hoping....I'm "hoping" that the pistons are notched for valve reliefs, as they are supposed to be keith black pistons, and I haven't verified that yet. I'm also hoping no water got in the engine from when I left it outside previously (covered) IF the pistons aren't notched, I'll have to clay them up to check piston to valve clearances, as it's gonna be tight. If there is no clearance, I'll have to pull and replace, or have the pistons cut for reliefs. Hoping everything goes right, I'll just be able to pull the e6 heads and swap on my e7's and weiand stealth. I'm also gonna have to change over the bottom end, putting in an old style oil pump and pickup tube, and the old style oil pan. Then I'll have to yank the old drivetrain, and bolt the c4 up preferably to the new engine before I drop it in. Not sure what level you wanted to help with. FOr this reason, my best start would be to likely put the new engine on a stand, then yank the heads and go from there. Assuming you want to help with the plug and play part, meaning everything be ready to go, the earliest I can see is the 3rd or 4th weekend of June, or about one month from now. What do you think about all this? this will be my first time adapting a late model roller into an early car, but I've also got a really good friend who JUST did the exact same thing into a 67 falcon, so he's got experience I can go off of. LOL, parts of the suspension need to be replaced too as she sits now... (the engine closest to us on the right side is the one going in to the mav....the one behind that is the 5.0 explorer gt40 roller block going into my bro's mustang, and my gt40p explorer block is on the other side of the garage) excuse the mess, I just moved, and am in process of clearing out the garage, that's why i won't be ready till end of june. btw, Just bought an air compressor, so this should make it go quicker.
sure, I'll take just about anything to get rid of it. Problem is, you're in washington? It's a 72 302 engine, not original to this particular mav. Years back, I had a ticking sound. Had a friend in auto shop rebuild the heads just cause he needed some heads to work on. Brought the heads back, put all new lifters on, fired it up, #7 compression low, #8 much lower. Put almost no miles on it since then, maybe 10 years ago, and never really bothered to investigate why. My opinion, bad lifters or bad rebuild job on the heads. I doubt it was the rings, but who the hell knows. Maybe I just torqued the rocker arms down wrong, I don't know, I sure didn't know jack back then, lol. Now I don't care, because i've got a much newer/more powerful 302 for it. I'm not sure I want to strap it on a pallet though and ship it, unless you're in the area often with a truck. Let me know. (I still fire it up every now and then, but really hasn't been run much in years)
yeah..shipping for that would not be very pracitcal for me as i am 16 and have about 700 dollars right now to get watever i can to start the build. its being built from the bottom up so i need a block and anything i can get to work with at least. well good luck with your swap and all.
Jeremy, Is the HO motor running with the existing pistons and 86 heads? If so, it should probably have clearance for the E7 heads because they have the same valve geometry I think. I'm no expert at this stuff, but I would love to help out and learn some stuff. It will be good experience for me because I plan on rebuilding my engine. Also, my workmate is a real expert at the HO motor, he used to build engines at Rodeck (top fuel engine manufacturer) and is a total gearhead so if we have any questions on the 5.0 HO motor, he will know the answer. I'll let you know the next time I'm heading up that way for the weekend and maybe I could help with something or check out what you've got. I go by Corona all the time heading to my in-laws in Glendora. I also plan on racing my Mav at Fontana as soon as possible. Good luck and I'm sure we'll hook up some day. I'll PM you my phone #. Erick
WHile i've never built my first 5.0 yet, I know quite a bit. can't get into too much detail, no time, but for some reason, the e7 heads are a tighter fit. My friend just threw e7's onto an 86 engine I sold him, and when he clayed it, there was 0 clearance, on the exhaust valves, Ithink. He pulled the pistons and cut them. I "think" I don't have stock pistons though, we'll see. This engine was running (strong) when I parted the mustang out. Guy I bought the stang from had supposedly put a fresh rebuild on this engine recently before I bought the car.
