What is the max lift I can run on the stock pistons? Will .503 or .508 be to much? This rebuilding engine thing is beginning to keep my but. Maybe I should have paid some else & not learn anything...naw.
    Need help,
    THANKS:huh:

I run a .575 lift cam with flat top forged pistons and a 0 deck. No marks in the clay or the pistons!!! (heads also shaved ever so slightly and the block is a 68)

I had a 512 lift cam in my old 302 with KB stock replacment flat tops and stock '69 heads and my clearance was pretty minimal...I tried to advance the cam..but the motor refused to turn over by hand. Best way is to do a clearance check and then you will know how much room you will have(should always check clearances regardless)

Cam duration also plays a big part in clearance.

that was my next comment. It is not just the lift but how long they are open in the cycle. mine is running around 288* 252* @ 050

I was running a Comp cam with 230 deg.duration @.050 and .512" lift with flat top pistons with no problems.

I have boiled it down to 2 cams.
    1. 270 duration, .470 lift, 216 degree EXT
    2. 270 duration, .496 lift, 221 degree EXT
I was thinking if I use the 1st cam, I might be able to use 1.7 rockers. Both cams make power in the same range.
