Hi everyone- I've been thinking about upgrading the carb on my 1970 mav w/ 250 ci engine.....It appears that the autolite 2100 or the Holly-Weber 5200 would be the best bets for a carb, but I am wodnering wheter there will be enough clearance for the adapter and carb under the hood. Has anyone tried doing this?
I will let you know in a couple of weeks. check this thread: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=15898
Yep. But it will still make one heck of a difference. The Holley 5200 is based on the Weber designed progressive two-barrell. It works like a spreadbore carb - small primary venturi; large secondary venturi. It should improve gas milage.
I really think so. At curising speed, only the primary venturi will be opened. Hence, running on one smaller barrel. When you romp it, both barrels come wide open. It will work like a Quadrajet 4-bbl carb, only cut in half, so to speak. I will be able to let you know in a few weeks. However, I'll need to check the milage before I have the AC installed.
Hi, I just wanted to chime in with my personal experience: I have a '73 Maverick with the 250. I mounted the H-W 5200 on a Stovebolt 2-into-1 adapter, and there is room under the hood. I did remove the factory carb heater and mounted the Stovebolt adapter directly to the log manifold. FYI, I modified the stock air filter canister to mount to the H-W 5200 so that I could re-use the K&N filter that I had already bought. I am very happy with the performance of the H-W 5200. The 250 is very responsive running on the small primary barrel and there is a really nice seat-of-the-pants reward when the secondary barrel opens! My next project in the carburetor/manifold area will be to open up the single-barrel hole in the log and fabricate an adapter to mount the H-W 5200 directly. I think there's some untapped performance potential there! Regards, BaldEagleMav
I am working on the 200 in my 72 Comet. I am also interested in more carburetion, to go along with the other mods. Has anyone given any consideration to the kickdown linkage for the automatic? I would like to keep it functional with the weber/5200. Maybe a Lokar flexible unit, I don't know.
rfarncomb, where in Seattle are you from? I work in North Seattle, close to Shoreline....I live in South Seattle, close to Auburn...would like to meet up sometime.
There isn't much to say about the factory one barrel. What gets me is that from day one of the 2300 4-banger, in the Pintos, it had the 5200 two-barrel. Ford never modified the inline six to accept one.
Hey mercurycruizers- Im actually not from Seattle, I'm from across the water in Poulsbo (out on the Kitsap Peninsula). I'm at school right now up in Bellingham, bu I'll be home for hte summer ina couple weeks.
