They use standard Ford engines, there is no reason for a Maverick engine to vibrate unless something is wrong. You will always have a mild vibration, but nothing worse than any other 70's era car. As bad as described, I bet you have the wrong balancer or something. Also, as TL said, check that the bellhousing bolts are tight, flywheel to converter bolts are tight. I tried the 85 flywheel briefly on my 74 when I thought only the Mustangs had the 50oz imbalance (my parts came from a crown vic), we're talking the rear view, seats, dash, hell, the entire car vibrated (jumped!!). Even if the motor mounts weren't bolted down it wouldn't vibrate like that, only a good clunk on acceleration and when letting off the throttle. You did nothing other than change the front end? What is your engine/tranny combo? A bad drive shaft won't make it slip into neutral or anything similar.
my car vibrates on the verge of ridiculous but with no motor mounts and a "mild" cam it is not that surprising
it turns out it was the fly wheel it had a 28.5 ounce weight and needed the 50 ounce weight i had 2 options 1 let my machinist order me onespecial 2weeks to get or buy the flywheel for an 85 mustang motor knock the weight off and weld it on to my flywheel where the 28 .5 weight was .......all i can say is there is one mustang out there thats gonna be short a flywheel some day lol .. thanks for the help guys
I don't think you can just knock the weight off and put the other in the exact same place, It needs to be put on a static balancer when a weight is chaned or moved. I would go ahead and bite the bullet and do it right and remove the tranny and put the correct flywheel in. Just my some times a little more work will save a lot of headaches, and once again don't drive or run the car until you get it repaired, unless you also want to change all your crank bearings too.
I've been trying to track down a wicked vibration as well. I'm in the same boat as you. turns out Ive had the 28oz. flexplate on my engine for 3 years now..... oopsie so I got a 50oz one at the yeard yesterday for ten bux. I sure as hell wasnt going to spend $70 on a new one when there are perfectly straight used ones. This is going to help smooth out my engine but I know its not the cause of my vibration. Ive had this vibration from 2000 rpm to 3000 rpm ever sicne my car stuck WOT on me and I had to shut it off at about 4000 rpm:16suspect what a backfire that was..... I am really really really hoping that the balancer spun on me and this isnt something internal. That would put a damper on my summer for sure. Oh and this vibration seems to get worse on decel, and gets smoother if I put it to the floor. could this be a carburator problem? I have a 600 edelbrock on a dual plane intake. maybe one side isnt getting the same amount of gas, causing a vibration? I dont know.
