Ok to those of you who have given me advise on my distributor probelms you could see this one comiong a mile away. First off the dist would'nt seat because the oil pump shaft is large than the hole in th edist shaft, have to get a difernt dist. Now, with all the jacking around I will be shocked to find my timing isn't way off. Waht is the procedure for finding TOp dead center and getting my timing set back to how it should be

Pull the #1 spark plug and place your finger over the spark plug (not, in the hole) have someone bump the starter until it pops you finger off the hole due to the compression. This will be TDC, check your marks on your balancer and your set.

maybe terry could help you with this...

have him put his finger in the end of the(#1) plug wire...bump the motor over untill he "screams", then check your mark on the balancer...your set...t.f.f.:yup:

hmm...fingers near spark plug holes and then turning the motor using the starter.....i would say there has to be a safer way to do it...

    like a compression tester....JMO

also if possible on your balancer you will have a little marking that says TC this is top dead center when you line it up with timing marker. But there is two Two top dead centres on your motor one for exhuat and one combustion so you will either be right on on or 180 out.

When people stop using their finger to find top dead center, real hot rodding has died.

That is why I said stick your finger over the hole not in the hole. Besides the compression tester doesn't POP like your finger does, that's half the fun! Especially with big compression:bananaman
I think Dan Starnes said it best!(y)

I agree with Dan Starnes 100%.

If you can't avoid smashing your finger testing for a compression stroke, maybe other hobbies beckon! LOL! ;)

Have done it that way for years and still have all my fingers! Perfectly safe if executed correctly.

Hold my beer and watch this!:biglaugh:

Ok make sure I got this right I cover the hole with my finger but I am not putting downward pressure, correct, I know not to put my finger in the hole, I assume its gonna be obvious when it pops, then I can check the mark on the balancer to see that it lines with one of the marks.
