I just bought new leaf springs to replace my old sagging ones. I took them to get installed and the shop said I'd have to find new bolts, shackles, and hangers also because mine are so rusted it's no longer safe. I have found the shackles on jc whitney's website, but I don't know where to buy the bolts and hangers. can anyone point me in the right direction with this? thanks nick
thank you that website helps a lot. I tried to call them today, but they were busy.. so I'll have to keep trying. I still need to find somewhere that sells hangers... so if anyone knows that one let me know
Sounds like the shop is giving you the run around. Maybe they don't want to work on older cars?? The u-bolts and rear spring hangers are readily available at any shop dealing in spring work on cars and trucks. As far as bolts go, a good grade 8 available at any hardware store, is the same as the factory uses. Seen this senario on not so new cars, happen before, need to find an old timer, like me, who is used to working on nasty, hard to get loose, parts and piedes, to do the job or give you some advice. May be wrong on this shop's motive's too??
I installed new U-bolts, and reused all the other original hardware. I bead-blasted the original shackles and repainted them. The front eye-bolts were just fine, they don't "wear out". I have heard that the hangers or "shackles" that J.C. Whitney sells are not good. Don't know if this is true or not, but ESPO Springs-n-Things has all that stuff if you cannot find it locally...
the part that I was told to find was the part that the back of the leaf spring bolts to the car. I dunno, I looked at it and it is very rusted but I don't think it would break or anything. I called springsnthings to see if they had that part and they said they didn't carry them because it's not a part that would normally need replaced unless it was rotted with rust. to me it just looks like to heavy pieces of steel bolted to the frame and to the leaf springs... doesn't look like anything special. I'm gonna take it to another shop and see what they think nick
