I just purchased a 1977 Maverick 2 door. It was a one owner car with 51,000 miles but has had some repairs made to the body. The vinyl roof has been replaced three times, the last by me a few days ago. It has a front half vinyl roof. I have seen a lot of Mavericks with vinyl tops but can't recall one with this particular style. When I got the car the top had been replaced along with an aftermarket snap-on plastic rear molding. The molding snaps onto an aluminum track that pop rivets to the roof requiring 1/8" holes. However there are four 1/4" holes near the roof rail that are not nessacary for the new molding. Did Ford have a style available like this? If so I would like to get the original molding. There are also two thin metal plates at the base of the windsheild post that finish the bottom edge of the top. Thanks, Fred
My Stallion has that same roof. I had mine replaced in 2000. I just left it up to the guy to make it look like it always did. Dunno what he did or where he found stuff but it looks like it did when it was new. If I see him I will ask him. Dan
Ya, I have always liked vinyl tops. Most people comment that they think it is interesting I kept the vinyl top. I have to tell them that the car has never been restored. Just maintained. I was doing some paintwork on my Harley today and had the car parked outside next to the dead Stallion. My wife commented "You know, as much as I have always hated that car, it kinda makes me sad to see what it would look like if it hadnt been cared for all these years" . Somewhere in there is a compliment I think, lol Dan
I curently have the vynle riped off but im not sure if i want to put it back. I like it without but at the same time i think its cool to be original
I've toyed with the idea of the vinyl roof when I repaint my car. But, think I will paint it black for now. If I want it bad enough, I can put it over the black paint job....
Vinyl roof I went to a couple of salvage yards over the past few days and found several Mavericks. Among them a 76 and 77 with the same vinyl top as mine. I was able to get a couple of good original moldings to replace the aftermarket with. Fred
Be warned: If you do not garage your car, you stand a chance of the roof rotting under the vinyl top. I know from experience I have a donor roof... just no time to put it on. Wish I pulled the vinyl off years ago. Dave
Dave, I own an auto upholstery shop and have replaced many tops over the years with severe rust under them, most were used cars bought at auctions in Florida and transported up to the northeast. It seemed every car with a vinyl top had a rusted through roof. It's a little less humid here in RI so rust under the top is not as big a problem. My 71 Dart has never been garaged and still has the original top on it with no signs of rust under it. Fred
