Could be you linkage is not adjusted properly. Not going all the way into park. Thats easy to fix. Worse case scenario is the parking pawl is worn. That will require getting internal with the transmission.

If you have the column shifter, it is the linkage is out of adjustment, or (what was wrong with mine) a bushing in the linkage worn out. There is a plastic or rubber bushing in the pivot joint bolted to the frame(I think it is under the steering box) but is hard to see from the top. The bushing in mine was completely gone causing a lot of slop in the linkage. I couldn't find the bushing new, so I got one out of a junk car. I have found these in early to mid 80's LTD's. I have seen them in the pivots in rangers with floor shifts. They are not easy to get out of the linkage(had to cut the metal that the bushing was snapped into) in order to salvage the bushing. In order to fix the maverick linkage, it needs to be took apart(isn' t meant to be). There is a shaft that runs through the center of the bushing and has a hat shaped piece of metal on the end of the shaft holding everything from coming apart. That little hat shaped piece has to be chisled off as it is spot welded to the shaft. Then after I put the new bushing in and put it back together, I took a nut that fit the shaft tight, drilled a small hole in the side of it for a set screw, slid it on the shaft to where the hat shaped piece stopped and tightened the set screw. The linkage needs to be removed from the car in order to fix it.

I agreed adjust your linkage. Its not going into park all the way. It doesn't sound like the linkage pawl is bad. If it was you would not put it in park. That happen to me the C- clip broke on the pawl inside know way it was going into park. If that happen its a easy fix.

Disconnect the shift linkage from the transmission and see if you can put it in park. If not than remove oil pan and modulator and look inside at the pawl. Check for broken teeth or a missing c-clip.

    TCI strikes again. . . .
    . . . . . and again and. . .

They are experiencing a lot of failures in the last two - three years and their qc is bad. The customer service lies about not finding anything wrong so you are forced to pay for what should be warranty work and shipping both ways.
I like Jay at Broader Performance a lot better than any of the others and he has better prices and a lot better transmissions.
