OK why don't we meet in Branson, Mo. isn't that about somewhere in the middle??? they have hotels, music, a strip to cruise, just a suggestion or how about memphis, tn. they have all the same and memphis motorsports park for drag racing. I would be willing to drive a reasonable distance, lets face it for either coast to attend a roundup it would take the better part of 1-1/2 weeks, 2/3 thirds of that for travel and about 1/3 for the roundup, a family would need a 2 week vacation for this. just trying to be realistic, personally I would like to see and meet the west coast group and see how big this party can get. keep thinking guys, you'll figure it out.
Why limit it to just east and west? With a little effort and planning, there could be 3 or 4 big meets. Look at the Goodguys street rod meets, they have them all across the country. Now there may not be as many of us Maverick/Comet guys as there are street rodders, but it seems wer'e growing in numbers all the time. After all, it's all about having fun with fun cars, ain't it?
I'd be up for having some type of Meet out here on the West coast. I'd travel, say 1,200 miles (Seattle to LA). I have a brother that lives there. I can visit him at the same time. He's about 15 min from, Knotts Berry Farm...I'm going to "Hot August Nights" in Lewiston, Idaho, the last weekend of this month. That's a 6 hour drive, over 300 miles. Anyone else up for it (Lewiston)? I have Don & DeeDee going with us, in there 73 Maverick Grabber.... It will be a blast from the past....
I think California (Northern Cali) is probably the best choice for several reasons. There are more possible locations, more club members and more activities. There's also Reno and Lake Tahoe to consider. Pretty much the whole state is within my driving distance. It might even be do-able for some West Texas folks as well. As far as timing goes, we can stagger it so it's not the exact same time as the Kentucky Round-up...maybe May-June?
The area west of the mississippi is huge geographically. Also there are those big hills called the Rockies. California will not pull anyone from west of there, so you cut some potential of participants there. The Roundup does not pull many from west of the mississippi as it stands. Moving the roundup to west of the Mississippi would probably lose 2/3 of the participants it now has. This is all good conversation and Thack had some very very good points. Dont know where this is all going to end up, but I do think discussing options will either lead to something cool, or it will end the thought. Just my .02 cents. Dan
I agree with Dan, the current round-up is fine where it is...just trying to get a large scale meet going out here as well. Forgive my ignorance but are there any activities near Bakersfield? Less than 30 minutes away I guess. There's a dragstrip in Inyokern also, right?
No Pitts And I would be talking about Bakersfield. YUCK. Flat, ugly, and hot. I'd drive to Tahoe or Reno which would be way farther, about 1000 miles, over going there. CO. to Reno, you can do HWY 50 across Nevada, "The lonliest highway in America". Speed limit? We doan' need no stinking speed limit. I'm going to look up racetracks in that area.
just getting one organized as a one or two day event would be a great undertaking for the 1st year. should you get something together, the drag thing is fine but it might be something that you can add on later ,it might ease the difficulty in the initial organization. the race part of the round up has only come about the last 2 years is it?
I guess there's a drag strip near Reno/Tahoe called Top Gun Raceway. It's actually 50 miles east in Fallon. Maverick, Top Gun...sound too corny? Should I say it? Aww, what the heck. "I feel the need, the need for speed!" :evilsmile http://www.topgunraceway.com/
Drag racing has been last 3 years,, remember in 2001 Roundup had like 10 cars and Wilbur Green brought 4 of them... sure has taken off. Dan
I wasnt sure,... I know it didnt happen the year we went and that was 2 or 3 roundups back just looking it up, we were at the 2002 roundup, did it start the year after?or did it start in 2001 and skip a year for some reason?
30 miles east Of Reno. Fernley. This is their blurb. 4.3 mile road course. Holy smoking brakes! Looks like the only thing other than the Top Gun thing, but that does have Corny with the CAPITOL C going for it, we'd get some great press. Top Gun because the Navy moved their Top Gun school from Miramar in San Diego to Fallon Naval Air station about 10 years ago. Yeah, a Naval base in Nevada. That side of Reno is not pretty though, you are heading out into the great Nevada desert, either Fallon or Fernley would need to be a day trip to race. And times are going to be relative because anywhere in the area you're probably going to be around 4000 ft., so not too hot anyway. I was hoping Carson City had something, since it's a nice drive to Tahoe from there and it's tucked right up against the Sierras, but only a small oval. About 30 minutes east of Reno is Reno-Fernley Raceway, located on Highway 95A just south of Fernley, Northern Nevada’s new hot bed of motor sports and recreation activities. The complex came into being in 1998, part of a 3000 acre master plan project. The 500 acre motor sports complex started to take form when one of the employees, a motor cross rider, asked if he could build a motor cross track on the southern section of the property. Soon after the modification of a natural bowl in the terrain started to change it into a 3/8 mile dirt oval. The facility enlisted the aid of Fred Nagle, a partner, who designed dirt tracks in California, at Chico and Susanville. The track has matured into one of the finest clay/dirt surfaces in the Western United States. Every other week during the season there is a stock car and IMCA modified show, 3/8 Open Wheel Modifieds, and Vintage Midgets, Sprint 360's on alternate weekends. In 2003, the paved road course opened with 1.2 miles, and by mid 2004 it had been extended to 2.3 Miles. By mid 2005, we will have added another 2 miles, making it one of the longest road courses in the United States. The road course is a host to races and club events by HMSA, NASA, Porsche, Audi, and many more sports car clubs and motorcycle groups. It is also residence to full time driving and motorcycle schools. Street Drags are held once a month at the road course drag strip, which features a 1/4 mile strip with trees and timing. There are more exciting special events coming up this season at the Reno-Fernley Raceway including Mud Bogs, and Sand Drags. Plans are being made for many additional improvements to the Raceway in the upcoming years. We hope that they will make your visits more enjoyable. In addition, we will strive to provide the Northern Nevada area with the quality motor sports entertainment they have become accustomed to. In closing, thank you for your continued support of Reno-Fernley Raceway. We hope you will visit us many times this coming season. Let's go racing!
i would have to look at next years race schedule to see if i could attend. i raced at fallon a couple of years ago. nice track. we stayed in town and the local people treated us like royalty. great mexican restaurant there. about a 16 or 17 hour drive for me. i've been looking for an excuse to go back to that restaurant. less than an hour away from sparks where they have a summit racing store. i think if you want to drag race you'll find that the strip at las vegas is not going to help you unless you run during one of there friday night shows. the rental for that track is sky high. but it is one of the greatest run tracks in the nation.
