Hello all, some of yall might remember me from a few years back when I was looking for a car, I wanted a maverick but ended up with a camaro. Anyway, now 3 years later I have had my fun with chevy, but now I want a ford. I want a 60's mustang but I think that would cost to much to get something decent. I have always wanted a Maverick/Comet, and in a few months I'm going to be looking to get a car. I have always wanted a Maverick, I can't really explain why, hardly anyone else I know likes them (or even knows what they are), It's some strange love or something, I can't explain it, but I can guess that yall probably know exactly what I'm talking about, eh? hehe! What should I look for or avoid? This will be a daily driver, and maybe later on something faster, but for now I'm focusing on daily driver. I don't want the larger bumpers, I assume that the earlier years have the smaller bumpers? Which years have the small bumpers? Also, what year/model exactly has this rear end light setup? I think it looks killer, reminds me of a 69 GT 350 or even a 69ish Cougar: Or was this custom? Either way, I think it looks killer. So anyway, I am in Los Angeles California, I'm new to the state, anyone here in LA or Cali? I'm guessing that I will be putting out about 2-3k for a decent Maverick/Comet. Where should I start looking? I don't know anyone in my area. If I find one that is all original (like an old grocery getter or whatever) will there be a lot of parts to replace? I am expecting to replace the usual belts, hoses, cap, rotor, plugs & wires, any filters, and probably shocks, breaks and tires. Aside from the usual "tune up" replacements, are Mavericks/Comets notorious for having to replace anything major? I would like to keep whatever engine I get for a while, but later on down the road a larger engine or healty 5.0 would probably be dropped in, at least that would be on my wish list to do. As for the future, if I get one with a 302, will that make it easier to put another nother 302 or 351 in, than say if I got a 6 cylendar? I guess what I'm getting after, is should I stick my neck out to get one that already has a 302? Thanks for any info, I hope this time it actually works out that I can get a Maverick, I'm having a hard time finding them in online "trader" sites.
That blue car was built by and belongs to Ray Parrish (rayzorsharp) on this board. The tailights are custom done, we can only wish Mav's came with tail lights like that. You sound alot like me about 6 months ago, looking for anything I could get my hands on. Now I have 3. Kind of funny/ironic, the only one I have that ran and drove when I got it was free and didn't come from someone on this board... Just keep an eye out on here and eBay. Odviously finding a car with a 302 already in it would make swapping another in very easy, but for a daily driver I am mighty happy with my 250 6 cylinder. I think the 250 6 straight 6 is about the altimate daily driver engine for a Maverick. Keeps up fine in traffic and will run 75-80 mph down the interstate all day and gets 30-35 mpg doing it. The small bumpered cars were '70-'72. '73 was an oddball year and had a small rear bumper and mid sized front bumper. '74-'77 were big bumperd cars.
Daniel Don't Discount The Fact That A Good Shape Maverick Is Not As Easy To Find As One Might Think. Don't Rule Out A Big Bumper Car As You Can Change The Bumpers If The Car Is In Good Shape, Also The Blue Car Was The Missisippi Version Of The Southern Maverick. A Mustang Is Easier To Find And Restore As They Make Almost Every Part For Them Where As A Maverick/comet There Are Very Little Repo Parts At This Time, Good Luck On Your Search.
Car For sale I have a 69 Mustang Coupe for sale. Has a 1978 302, with a two barrel carb. Also has the original 4 speed on the floor. Runns good, but needs cosmetics, like carpet, a door panel headlights. email me if your interested glen@williamsondesign.com The car is in Bettendorf, Iowa and the asking price is $2700.00 thanks Glen
i'm in the Los Angeles area... if you want any of my opinion i'd be more then happy to give it to you. mavericks are still around out here... i see them for sale here and there a good example is the yellow car that i found almost for free! so they are around. i also get asked alot about if i know anyone who wants to buy their maverick.. at one show i had two people ask me if they wanted to buy their maverick. the thing is they just never follow up. almost just like the people who call me about their car... i always call them back and leave a message but they never call me back oh wells. but yes they getting harder to find. the best thing about getting them over here they are not rust buckets. so your in the best area to find them! then again if you can't find one better for me, one less maverick to make mine more rare... lol!
Glen: sorry, I'm in California Maverick Man, what area of LA are you in? I'm in 90024, Westwood. If you hear of any other 2 door Maverick/Comets for sale (particularly, 69-72), do you think you could contact me? My number is 310.498.9169, and email is webmaster@danielbuck.net and dnsfailure@gmail.com I'm not quite ready to buy just yet, I would like to wait a month or two. But If I find something good, There is no reason I can't jump on it with a weeks notice or so. I don't really care what the exterior condition of the car is, just so long as it's not rusted like crazy. I dont' care if the paint is faded (hell, even if the body is just primer, I rolled for 2 years with primer on my camaro), or if there are dents in the metal, that doesn't matter to me. The first thing I do when I get a new car is take off all the badges and trim anyway, so I don't care about those either. The interior I don't mind so long as it's not a metal box. Main thing, is that I want something that can be used for a daily driver, I'm willing to replace the basics for now (belts, hoses, filters, shocks, breaks and so on) to get it road worthy, but I don't want to get into replacing major things like engine or transmission just yet. I would like a 302, so maybe I'll sit on it for a while until I find a 302. After a few months if I can't find one, I'll take whatever I can find I suppose. Maverick Man, do you take those photos of your car? I am into automotive photography as well, www.404photography.net , some of my work is on there. Do you photograph as well? If you do, I would love to meet up with you sometime for a shoot! I don't know any photographers out here in LA yet, heck I don't know any car clubs either. Anyone else in the LA area? Am I going to have trouble passing a late 60's or early 70's vehicle through emissions? What is the "cut off year" in California? Oh, and one more thing (sorry!) what all is involved to remove the larger bumpers of the 73+ models with the older smaller bumpers? Is it just as simple as swapping out the bumpers, they line right up? And, is this legal? (I read somewhere on google that the larger bumpers were "federally mandated") Because I don't have a car, I am not able to get out to any car shows :-( It's like a catch 22 :-\
I'm down south in San Diego county. Small bumpers can be put on with a few mods and are totally legal. The cutoff year for smog in CA is 75 or earlier, which doesn't require smog. There are alot of Mavs out here that are still in good shape and cheap, you just have to be willing to be patient, which is not easy. I found mine from Recycler.com for $500 with a V8 on the same exact date that I won another Maverick on ebay, so I ended up with 2. Oh well. I'll keep my eyes and ears open down here for one. Good luck. Erick
1975? really? Wow thats awesome! Sheesh, that sure is a relief. I had so much hell getting my camaro to pass emissions... in Arizona. It would never pass in Cali from what I hear. I know of a 73 Maverick for sale in Phoenix, they are asking a bit to much I think ($4500 firm, with a rebuilt 302). I'm not quite sure that it's still for sale (it's been a while since I have talked with the owners), would I have much trouble bringing a car into California? Would it have to go through any checks or anything if it's older than 1975? Is the 1975 cut-off year subject to change any time in the near future? I really really don't want to deal with emissions ever again, it was so much of a pain for me, I ended up just driving around for a year with no tags untill I got stopped. Long story short though, I got it to pass... by taking off the fuel injection and putting a carbureted intake on... of all things. But anyway, thanks for the info! Do you (or someone else) know exactly what has to be modified to put the new bumper(s) on? That would be great, because it opens up 3 more years of mavericks that I can be on the look-out for rather than just 69-72. I have a decent know-how on cars, I have always owned a somewhat older car so I have always had to replace things and never had money to let anyone else do it. But unfortunatly, the apartments here in LA don't seem to take kindly on people who work on their cars here, in Phoenix I did all kinds of stuff in the apartments, I had the top side of my engine dissasembled in the parking lot. So that means I might have to wait a while before I do anything semi-major unless I can find someone who lives close by me with a house and willing to let me work there. I know a guy who is willing, but he lives kinda far out I think. Thanks again for all the info guys!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-2-Door-73-Ford-Maverick-302-V-8_W0QQcmdZViewItemQ Here you go...in San Bernardino. Go to link above (ebay). 1973, V8 Grabber starting bid $500. Go get it.
Hm... that looks very tempting indeed! I doubt the reserve is anywhere near 500 though. I just spent $1800 on computer parts last week to build a workstation Damn, I should have waited on the computer. Trying to get everything at once here. :-\ I'm making a decent amount of money at my new job, but my rent is cutting a large portion of my pay, I need a few months to recoup from the computer parts before I can lay down money for a car. I suppose I need to get a California Drivers license as well? I currently have a Louisiana license. Has anyone here ever purchased a car off of ebay before? How does the process work? I don't even have an ebay account, I tried signing up but it's telling me "We are sorry. We cannot process your registration at this time." Not sure what that means . I'll try again tomorrow.
Buying off ebay is easy. Once you win the auction, you can either talk to the seller though email or you can talk to him over the phone and make the deal just like as if you were buying something out of the paper. Once you have the car at your house and you are happy with the transaction, you leave the seller a positive feedback.
