The mav is gone but i'm still here!
so today was the day to check the brakes
so i took off the front two rims to inspect them
    and what do i see
well first off the hoses are old and probally arent going to work well
the rotor on the right side looked good
but when i saw the one on the left
i saw that it was warped very badly:mad:
so now i have to have the rotors refinished
    and buy new pads/hoses

does anyone know where to get the hoses/lines cheap?:hmmm:

i hope the drums are ok -i'm going to be checking them 2morrow

oh yeah and how many pistons are in the calipers 2 or 4?

Any good Auto Parts store should have what you need. I got all my stuff at Auto Zone and Advance Auto, but I don't know if you have them over there.

It would probably be a good idea to replace your calipers and everything if your car has been sitting for a long time. If your rotor is visibly warped, your probably going to have to buy new ones.

I would replace the rear wheel cylinders and get a new spring kit also just to be safe...

so i got an estimate from kragen and they said that the brake pads and the hoses would be about $50

and my uncle said i can have the rotors refinished for like $10

i would like to replace everything but i'm on a tight budget

thanks waynes fords and jamie fo the tips

if by chance you need rotors i would suggest the "drilled" ones off e bay. they are a lot heaver than the parts store brand. i got a set from advance auto and they lasted about 8k and had to be turned 2 times. J.M.O..fank...:bouncy:

Yea, believe me, I know how it is. But I'm just finding out the hard way that if you skimp on things here and there, it will come back to bite you in the ass 2 fold a few thousand miles down the road.

Don't skimp on brake parts ... they are kinda important ... Also ... listen to Jamie ... I want to do a disc brake conversion on my 74 but want to also replace the front suspension while I am at it and use all new components for the brakes. Unfortunately I'm about to shell out a bit of money to my dentist over the next month or two so I gotta put the project on the back burner until I have the funds to do it right ...

Fortunately I have the luxury of letting my Maverick sit for as long as I like since it is not my primary transportation ...

The calipers are single-piston. They are about $15.00 each, or you can get a rebuild kit for $3.00 each. If the rotors are not too thin, they can be machined for as little as $6.00 each at Pep Boys. New Rotors are as little as $25.00-$35.00 each. Wheel bearings are cheap as well, although yours may need only repacking. New wheel bearing seals are cheap. New pads are $12.00-$15.00. Flex-hoses are about $15.00 each (recomended). Also check the rear flex-hose. Master cylinders are as little as $20.00-$25.00. It all adds-up, but a brake job on these cars can be done pretty affordably...

I'm figuring the entire brake swap and suspension rebuild will be between $500 - $600 .. That includes a new Power Booster & M/C since I'll probably due the power swap since I will have all the parts ... The complete front suspension kits go for about $275 on eBay ..

You said you could see that the rotor was warped ?, usually if you got a rotor outta round , An you step on the brakes you get a severe shaking when you hit the brakes .Theres really no sense in replacing a rotor if you can have it turned, Unless you just want to do a brake up- grade. An to be quite honest , if the car was stopping ok , an it wasnt shaking when you applied the brakes. , Then you can probaly get by with just throwing a set of pads on it for a bit till you get the money to do the job rite. You would be surpized what a set of new pads will do. cause usually the old ones are glazed an dont stop as well, Just remember if you do only put a set of pads on your not going to get full life outta them as if you had done a complete brake job.Over the years I've had to do this a few times cause money was tight, ie pay the rent or fix the car ???You gotta have the car so you can keep working.Like I said it will get you by for a Month or 2 easy .

I've done just the pads a few times myself. We do what we have to do to survive. If you do just the pads I think it's a good idea to try and break the glaze on the rotors. I have a small air powered grinder that I can put a Scotch-Brite pad on. I'll use it to clean the rotors real good along with some break cleaner. Seemed to work real good
When I swapped disc brakes onto my 71 F100 I bought new rotors and calipers. The calipers ended up costing me $5 each after I returned the core.

well the car has been sitting for quite along time now so i am going to change the rotors before it gets on the road-i just got an estimate from rotorpros and they said $125 icluding shipping for the front ones(Drilled/Slotted)

and i'm thinking of gettin [earl's solo-bleeds] for the new lines-to make them easier to bleed in the future
