So I was driving to school today and the mav died like it does sometimes, so i try to start it back up and all i get is i hear what sounds like the starter spinning like its winding up but not engaging to cause the engine to fire...gears stripped maybe? solenoid maybe? any thoughts. Recently it's been starting rough and making loud noises when the starter engages.

Either the starter bendix is bad or you have some teeth missing on your flywheel. Grab the fan blade and turn the motor over by hand a little bit. Then hit the starter & see what happens. If it still dont engage, chances are its the starter. If it does, its probably the flywheel.

If my car died sometimes I would be wanting to find out why.
