i'm checking to see what all needs tp be done for my swap...i plan on dropping in a 351 into my maverick, it originally came w/ the 302...and make the maverick into a 1/4 mile car i know im going to be getting a c6 transmission, will i need a different driveshaft? and bigger rear end? if there is anything else im missing, just feel free to let me know
you can keep the c4, you know...you sound like you wanna go fast, like me! 9 inch, 33 spline axles at least, 1350 yokes, spool, stuff like that. how fast do you wanna go?
Well, if you can get a C4 to handle 700 horse I would go with that over a C6 for weight savings. I don't know how much a C6 weighs, but I know I can lift a C4 a heck of alot easyer then a C6. And since your car is a '70, it has the more narrow transmission tunnel. A C6 may not fit without some modifications.
To go 8's in the quarter, you're not only going to need horsepower, but you'll need a near-perfect suspension setup. Making horsepower is gonna cost you money, but getting all of that to the ground is another thing entirely. It's not just simply bolting some things on and running an 8. You'll hafta do some serious experimenting to see what works with what to give you optimum traction. You'll need a pretty serious tire also, as I can't see just any old tire pushing you to an 8. You may have to tub the wheel wells merely to get a big enough tire under there to grab. Not trying to discourage you here, just letting you know that getting a car to run 8's, while it's NOT impossible, it's gonna take a LOT of money, time, effort, trial-and-error, etc.........Just be prepared. don't forget the complete roll cage, drivers certification;including licensing and physical, car certification, and you ain't gonna stop at that speed with stock brakes. get rid of all the weight you can. glass hood, fenders, doors, trunk lid, bumpers.
yeah, what those guys said. Just to give you an example. I plan on running mid 9's, or low 9's when its all over. Right now I am having the car mini tubbed to fit a solid 12 inch tire in there, or a 10.5w. The wheel wells are also being elongated to fit a taller tire in there. The frame has been notched. Frame connectors, full 10 point cage, with bars going into the engine compartment, fuel cell, scraped ever lick of weather caulk and insulation out, Strange disc brakes in the front, etc. A c4 can handle 700 hp. But its gonna be a 15-2000k tranny. Worth it in my opinion. . Look at it this way. Take your budget, divide it by two. Half goes to the chassis, half goes to the motor and trans. Sooooo many guys fall in love with the motor, and drop it into a chassis that isn't even close to handling the power, safely nor effeciently. Again, not to burst a bubble, buts its real...
When guys get really fast, some seem to like the PG. Being a quarter car though, I am not sure if that is what is needed. The PG is apparently very strong when built right and is behind a lot of Fords. Dave
Shocktowerectemy... M2 front suspension and a custom tranny tunnel in the firewall/floorpan. Front and rear engine plate style mounting. Custom headers. Custom driveshaft. It is a lot easier to go 351c or 351w. If you were to go through all the work to get a 351m in there, it's the same stuff you would do to get a 460 swapped in. So, either do the work and put a 460 in there, or don't do the work and swap in a 351c/w. Dave
I doubt you will get a 351m to put out those kinda numbers. A 351W stoked to 408ci with a healthy compression and cam or a 351w with NOS or a Blower. I have started to piece together \(very little yet) a full chassis maverick car running a 351w twin turbo set up. I only have the turbos so far but if it takes me 10 years then so be it. I am expecting to spend 60k or better.......and hoping to ruin in the low 8's to high 7's
