Looking for 12's You are running a very similiar setup as to what I had when I was racing. 12's are definately do-able with your setup but you will definately need some gears and some kind of posi unit or traction lock and SLICKS FOR THE TRACK. You will never get any traction with street tires with that setup. I had a nine inch rearend out of a 59 Ford wagon that was a direct bolt in. What gears you put in will be determined by how much you want your engine to scream while driving around town or on the freeway. I had a race only car and was running 5.14 gears with a mini-spool and 29.5 tall slicks. 4.11's are probably the tallest gear you would want for a daily driver. Here is what I had in my Mav. Ford 302ci with flat top pistons, stock crank and rods. Hydraulic cam around .515 lift, can't remember duration. Edelbrock Torker manifold on top of 289 heads with oversize valves and ports matched with a Holley 600cfm double pumper carb. Headers with extensions. It ran 12.50's at 107mph. I can't see any reason why you couldn't get into the high 12's. Keep us posted and welcome aboard!
O.K. Cool,so 67th and Indian School?your real close by and have a garage full of Fords. My tranny has not been touched and I think it would be wise to go through it before I start pounding on it,any suggestions or possibly got a servicable c-4 lying around that you would be willing to part with?
It's starting to sound like this is a very reasonable goal for a maverick,3.73:1 gears? will I be asking too much of the 302?
Welcome aboard David. Could you be a bit more specific about your engine? You're on the right track wanting to get rid of your long, open rear. Getting into the twelves is a lot of work, but a good solid combo and some traction will get you there. I'm with Don on the drag radials, but I can tell you they are not the best choice if you drive the car a lot, especially if you get a locker or spool. A softer limited slip type rear may net a bit more longevity out of them, but they really are soft. Is your transmission and converter stock?
I wouldn't run too tall of a tire with the 3.73 gears, but I think you are on the right track( no pun intended ). I am interested to see how it runs. Keep us posted!
Yes they are stock,no stall, never opened the tranny.I just mentioned going through it before I start pounding it.As for the engine I put it together in 97,lost the cam card so I would have to profile the cam myself which I am considering just for my records..The intake is the edelbrock performer rpm 289.The valve size I believe are 2.02 intake and 1.60 exhaust (the 351 windsor stock valves are what was installed if I remember right)I did this 8-9 years ago at 20 yrs old with very little automotive knowledge as compared to now.I actually lost interest in the car for a few years and it was just sitting in the garage under a car cover.Wife began to pressure me to sell it so I decided to wake it up just for fun.Its not my daily driver and Im in a better position to tinker than I was 9 years ago so when she asked me to do something with it,I decided to go wide open,900 mile per hour with my hair on fire.
That's great! One thing you could do for both form and function is to update your interior with something lighter and more comfortable. I did this a while back and I'm sure I saved pretty close to a hundred pounds between getting rid of the heavy benches in favor of buckets and pitching all the heavy sound deadening material. I've further updated since this, adding carpet and actually yet another set of seats, but here is an old post of mine about my interior conversion: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=6109&highlight=finally+eclipse
Donlt mind Rick he's just jeolous of the "Badmav" cuz I actually get do drive my car Everybody else like me I swear......rightguys........guys???? Glad to see you made here. These guys know their stuff
Thanks for the welcome and I actually have buckets in it right now. They came out of a 75 Maverick but the drivers bucket is tweaked.the seat back hinge on the right side of the seat doesn't lock in place like the left side does.It may be a simple repair but I haven't really looked at it too close yet.I also pulled the disc brakes off the 75 Maverick and put them up front on my 73.I should probably be more specific on the details of my Maverick in it's description.
