    Yeah, that's the Y-block.
    272, 292, 312...
    Forefather of the FE block.

If you can pull the valve cover the hi-po had screw in studs, If you can pull the oil pan there will be a counterweight behind the balancer next to the bottom timing gear

Yep! Those numbers ring a bell (my brother told me the intake fit 3 different cubes but I wasn't sure what they were).

Are these the engines that have the cross-over manifold that was routed from R to L over the FRONT of the engine? :coco:

I can imagine the dret of somone having to pop the hood on one of those cars with that engine. That cross-over pipe must've burned many a man while trying to do any sort of trouble-shooting under the hood - especially while the car was running!

Just as quick to note : 271hp 289's heads have a special casting, its a 289 with two bumps cast under it, located between the rockers on the top of the head.
Just some FYI for hi-po hunting

Some of them had them. I believe all the trucks did. The Y block also sported external oil pump, rear distributor, and solid cams with adjustable valve train. You could get a 2 bbl, 4 bbl, 2-4 bbls and a super charged version from the factory, all back in the late 50's.

'Special' was also used to refer to the Y-block 312 cid mill. It was called the
    'Thunderbird Special'.

I have a book with a pic of the '289 Special' identical to the one in your post.
It described it as 'the replacement to the 260', nothing more. It's just a
regular 289. It could have some value to period correct concours folks but
it is not an upgraded performance package.

    (y) Thanks for all the input guys!! After researching and not finding too much info on the "Special" I would tend to agree it was marketing hype to soothe the customers used to the 260. But either way it's a cool engine, it may have to make it's way into my Maverick !! By the way guys I got my 69 1/2 today !! Can't wait to start the tear down and rebuild. I'll have a 200 and trans for sale. And I'll also be looking for suggestions on a paint color !!
    Thanks again, Darrel

Would you happen to have the bellhousing for the automatic transmission that came off the engine and is it for sale?

The 289 2v special was only a "289 2v nothing special" just a basic engine. 64 1/2 mustangs could be had with a 260, 2892v, or a 289 4v. all were 5 bolt bell housing engines. 62 fairlanes came with the 221 cu v8 engine. 63 fairlanes came with either a 221, 260, 289 or 289 hipo. 5 bolt bell housing engines, 64 fairlanes came with 260, 289 2v,289 4 v and 289 hipo. this does not even cover the falcons, comets, galaxies or big mercurys. form 65 up the 260 was dropped and you could get 289 2v, 289 4v or 289 hipo with 6 bolt bellhousings. It would take pages to list all engine combs. hope this helps.
