I've got an interesting noise from my 302. It's made it ever since I got it running and hasn't changed. At any RPM, there is a noticeable whirring/whining sound that increases with engine speed. It also seems to pulsate at half-speed. I wonder if it is my fuel pump. I havn't been able to find any vaccum leaks, and I don't have a gear drive or a blower. Anyone heard of a fuel pump that whines? I also ran it without my alt. because I'm using my 6 cyl alt. On a V-8 it runs upside down kinda with the belt tention opposite. That's not it though. It doesn't seem to cause any hassle, it's just a little weird. Any thoughts?

You can remove the fan belt(s) and start the car to see if the noise disappears. This will rule in or out all of your crank driven accessories. I have never heard a mechanical fuel pump make that noise. I am not saying that it is not possible but that it is very unlikely fuel pump related.

I have had a couple of cheap converters make a similar noise just before they grenaded.

That's what I meant when I said I ran without my alternator. I just took the belt off.

do you have power steering? it could be the pump if you do. if not, id check the trans fluid for burn and definately try to narrow down where the sound is originating by using the screw driver/stethescope method.

No power steering. I'll look into the tranny noise. You know, I used the original converter when I swapped tranny's. It's pretty low mileage though.

I had a PCV valve do that once, noise would change from a whine to a whistle and back again.

if the fuel pump is in the tank, i dont think you will hear it as loud as you say.. and a mechanical fuel pump wont whine... at least i dont think it will

if you hear it up front.. it could be one of the following

Belts (like suggested, take belts off and start car to see if it still makes noise. dont drive it like this since you have just now disabled the water pump)

Power Steering pump (take the cap off while the engine is running and see if it gets louder)

Tranny low on fluid will cavitate and make a whinning sound

vacuum leaks can make a whinning sound if there is a lot of vacuum and a small hole, it will whistle more than a whine, but you know what i mean.

if after you have checked all of this, then yes, i would look under the hood for an ex wife or g/f lol

    good luck

Well, I'm only 19 so the ex-wife is unlikely, at least I think so. I'm still wondering about my tranny. I checked the fluid and it is good on the stick, but the noise sounds like it could be coming from that area. I don't know a ton about automatics. When I put the tranny in, it was a 60,000 mile C-4. I pulled the pan, cleaned the filter, but it was really clean to begin with. I used the same converter, assuming it was okay. It shifts pretty good other than some slight slippage. (I'm putting alot more torque through it than it is used to) I just don't know.

Have you checked the fan blades for cracks?

The fan is brand new, but that's an interesting idea.
