It is time to get some new spark plugs and when I went to the store there were too many kinds to choose from (boyfriend usually buys them) so I decided to ask what people here use? Last time I think I got the basic Champions. My mav is a 73 302. Thanks

    Plugs-

    Stay away from Champions.
I wouldn't go with anything fancier than your basic autolite plugs though.
I worked at a Schucks (AKA Kragen, Checker) for a few years and had more champions come back fouled or otherwise defective than any other brand.
If there is nothing wrong with your ignition system, and your motor isn't too worn out, you don't need anything fancy.

I used to run champion in the race car. Switched to autolite platinum and picked up almost a 10th. I DO run the autolites.

I have heard the same thing about Champions over the years. I have used Autolite and also Bosch with good results...

Motorcraft or Autolite. Get resistor plugs for no radio interference.

anything but champions! i prefer (any kind of) platinums...i have 85,000 miles on them in my truck that says you don't have to change them unless it somehow occurs to you to do it. i changed them out at 85k thinking it MUST be time. no change in performance or gas mileage. using bosch right now.

Autolite and Morotcraft plugs work fine. The Bosch "Super" (NOT Platnum) work very well also and are only 99 cents each...

    Champion

I've got to get in on this as well!

I wouldn't use champions if they were the last spark plug on earth.

I used them all the time, once... the hole inside of one spark plug came apart after 3 minutes of running. Beat the $*%& out of the piston and head on the drivers side then when across the intake to the passenger side and did damage there as well.

This was on a stock Chevy Monza. I was helping a friend, some help I was.
I called champion the next day and they said it was piston to valve clearance and maybe they were already damaged when I installed them, saying I did.

Ok most of us here have installed plugs, how do you do that much damage to a plug before you install it and not know it? All I did was check the gap, and if I remember correctly they were all right.

Champion said sorry Charlie you are SOL. Thanks Champion your fine product cost my friend a motor.

HELL YES STAY AWAY FROM CHAMPION!!
Autolite and Morotcraft, stick with what works.

I guess this time I give a little more then just my two cents.

OK: I've installed about a thousand or more Champions and have never had a problem due to a defective plug. The only way I know a plug could damage a piston other than being broken is by mabey having one that goes too deep in the combustion chamber (wrong plug?). Autolite and Motorcraft are ok too. That was my first thought, same plug (by part number) that came out went back in. Champion even said it was the right plug for the car, go figure.

Champions used to be poorly made a few years ago (offset electrodes, etc., just poor quality control), but they fixed that not too long ago. They are actually a very good quality plug now. On the other hand, a plug that is NOT good quality is the Bosch brand...whether you're talking platinum or the crappy "supers", they don't perform and they are poorly made. In fact, most Bosch products are so poorly made that they have been sued many times by Mercedes, BMW, .... I have seen them actually blown across the room on a higher compression 350 (not from contact either, mind you!). They make pretty good wiper blades, but that's about as far i'd go.
Autolites, Motorcraft (which are made by champion, i am told by several reliable sources), Champion, and ACDelco's all run great in Fords. Just stay away from overseas brands and you're fine (including Accel plugs--made in china). I personally use the $1.99 Autolite platinums from CSK.
