Hello I was told that the C6 trans out of the mid to late 70s ford vans have Small bell housing C6 trans that will fit our maverick like the C4 does.

Is this true?, because my grandfather has a 77 ford van he uses for storage and told me i could have the trans it i want it.

    Thanks Jim

A lot of trucks and vans, equipped with 351W, had C-6 trannys. Those should fit. However, I think you are better off with C-4. It's lighter, requires less HP than a C-6, and already fits our Mavs.

    I think about all van's had C6's in the 70's and 80's. I have a '78 E150 that I got for 50 bucks. It has a 300 straight 6 and a C6 with the 302 pattern and a 9 inch rear.

I've never seen an 80's Econoline in the junkyards that didn't have a C6. People say the baby C6's are hard to find, but I could go get 5 of them on any given day.

That said, I would stick with a C4. It's lighter and will hold up to about any amount of power you will throw at it in a Maverick.

The c6 takes more hp to turn than any other 3-speed auto, all you really need them for are heavier vehicles and big blocks.

    From what I'm told, a C6 = heavy, horse-power robbing tranny.

i actually bought a 86 ford ranger that had been converted over to a 302 and the guy that i got it from told me it had a c5 in it and i had never even heard of one until then and when i started looking through junkyards for a c4 the junkyard i bought my trans from said they had a bunch of c5's but not many c4's so i asked them what the difference was and they said the way you tell the difference in them is the way the dipstick tube goes into the trans

on a c4 the dipstick goes straight down into the trans itsself and on a c5 i think it goes in through the pan but don't hold me to that i might be mistaken and internally i'm not sure what the difference is between the two

Thanks, thats some good reading right there.

As for the Econoline vans I guess it's just around here but 98% of the ones in the Pull A Parts here have C6's, weather they have a 300 6 cyilnder, 302, 351, or 460, they all have C6's.

    Thanks, but i have desided not to use a c6. I will be rebuilding a c4 if I don't deside to use a T5 5speed manul trans.

I have found the same thing about the baby 6...
The U-pull-it has a dozen of them...

The way it was put to me years ago was: The C6 takes right at twice the horsepower to spin compared to the C4. 14 hp compared to 28 hp were the numbers I heard.
This is bad enough without mentioning the Mav never had parts available for the swap compared to just about every other FoMoCo product. So there would be very much fabbing and engineering. Then SBF headers don't work with C6.

I agree with everything being said here and Yes is takes more power to run, its heavier, harder to get it to fit in. But IMO I like the C-6 better. The C-6 takes a beating, doesnt get that 2nd to 3rd flare so common in C-4's, its stronger, and lasts longer. I had an ATO race C4 trans and it still didnt last as long the mild built C-6 I had.
The C-6 worse case uses 5% more power, I think the C4 is listed as 17% and the C6 is 20% or 22%.. The C6 would be a great choice for a no problem, killer strength tranny even in its stock form its stronger then some built 1000$ C-4's
