I have cutouts on my exhaust, between the 6901s and the glasspaks. When I take the cutout off, and run open header, I expected more power, but instead, got a bunch of spit and sputter on hard accelleration up around 3500-4000 rpms. Luckily, I was on a country backroad. If I had been at the track, it would have been VERY embarrassing.

Is there some kind of carb or timing adjustments I need to do to make the open headers run better?

bump the jets up a few sizes. also when i take my mufflers off the rpm reaches the shift points a lot quicker.:)

Lean...that explains why it worked well when I first put them on...since then, I have riched the metering rods about 4 settings richer.

So, just drop in the old rods and go? Maybe even leaner than the stock (edelbrock stock settings) rods?

i think they are saying its lean now. usually opening exhaust leans out the motor. since it used to work well, and you have richened it more if i follow you properly, could this relate to a fuel supply problem? are you "running out of gas"?

definately too lean for the cutouts. remember that more air coming out also means more is going in. the gas has to be able to keep up. try changing the rods first, if that doesnt help you can run a little begger of secondary jets and go from there. also i agree with blown about lower compression engines needing a little back pressure.

I do have a fuel delivery problem, especially when I gun it. I also run a little lean, but I have had to rich it up by putting in the richest rod I have (without switching out the jets), and the plugs are now just starting to get a little color to them, but still too light.

I guess I will leave the cutouts closed until I rebuild the engine and they will benefit from them.

    Thanks for the pointers.
