I just now brought up the brains to bring this question up. I got my VIN number professionally decoded. It says i Run a 200 I6 at 115 horsepower. then why, on my air filter, does it say "Maverick: 120 HP" Just wondering Austin
What I want to know is how in the world a maverick with a 170 with "105"hp must be like, I know my 200 with its 115 - 120 hp is a dog going downhill with a tailwind. The brochure in 1970 says the standard mav with a 170 is a zippy car. It is not zippy with a 200???? What is the argument about?
he thinks his 1983 Mazda RX-7 has More horsepower than my mav, his runs at 115 max on the local dyno. mine says it has 120 but i haven't gotten to dyno it yet.
Lets see your mav, 2600 with a full tank, his Mazda who knows, Probably has better ratios in his tranny and if they weigh the same, His mazda would probably win. I would boast the cool factor rather than the 200 i6 power factor. Take him for a ride through town and show him how many people oogle at your car rather than at his mazda. Although I sure would like to see your little mav Beat his Mazda -Todd
Unfortunately, in 1971 they rated HP at the flywheel, so that's really about 80-85 HP at the wheels. If he's cassis dyno-ing at 115, i hate to say it, but he's got more power.
You might also want to point out the fact that your car is 3X years old, and still running, while his POS Mazda (mazda's have got to be the worst of the imports) is probably in worse shape and half as old. I have known several people with RX-7's and they are a well-designed car thrown together with cheap parts. The rotary engine is also a flaw, which is exactly why the germans dumped it on the japanese. Maybe you can offer to race him when his apex seals take a dump on him again (or maybe they already have).
Rotary a flaw? Sorry CACollo, but I have to disagree with you there. The rotary engine is an excellent design that has not been given the refinement needed to be practical and reliable untill recently. Do a bit of research on the new version known as the renesis. 250hp Naturally aspirated from 1.3l. Can easily turn 11,000 RPM in stock trim (although factory rev limiter is 9,000) in a package about the size of a small dog and weighing about 150 lbs. I'd say the rotary is one hell of a design. Now that it's back in production I hope to see a lot of research and development go into it and further increase its potential. Just my opinion...
I used to own an rx-7 (lost a seal at 80k) nice car though. One thing I would like to mention about them though, is that the horsepower that they make is worthless, because they have absolutely no torque. none at all. nice in the twisties but in a straightline it was the slowest car I've ever owned.
