In the 'Gulf Coast Ford Show' thread, I posted about some parts I picked up at the swap meet and gave a little info on how I stumbled on this...

The first pic shows how the babbit was riding before I pulled the cam.
The pieces fit together nice and tight.

The second pic shows how it looked when I pulled the cam and the babbit fell out.

The third pic shows the 2 flakes of babbit.

The end of the bearing is smooshed a bit, like they goofed up installing the bearing.
The oil channel is also distorted like it was a sloppy install.
We think this was done at the factory in 72 and has been like this for the last 34 years and 80k miles.
The engine has never been apart to my knowledge.
The factory plastic cam gear was still in place.

I've seen water get in the oil & cause the bearing material to flake like that.

But, from what I can tell...looks like it might just have been installed improperly. Call Ford & gripe. Tell them that warranty should cover it since it was defective since day one.

Er...at least that's what people do to me all day, every day.

i'd say i'm sure sorry but that probably happened right after the warranty ran out about 30 some years ago.:)

I'd say you were pretty fortunate to have found the cam at the show, otherwise  ????? who knows when it might've caused some major damage.

'Glad you caught it before it reached only a 150,000 miles ;)

A Ford tech would probably ask "What's a cam bearing?"
