    Sorry for so many posts.
If I am using a 302/306 in a 73 maverick, what gear would you use?
I have 351 windsor heads, a small solid lift cam, or a comp 280 magnum hydrolic that came in the engine in the first place.
    Also I have a 3500 stall,performer rpm manifold,holley 650 dp,and c4 trans, It has what I think is a 4.62 gear right now, is that too much.
    Thanks Steve

What are you doing with the car?? Are you racing it(only) or is it a street car or both?

    Sorry,
It will be used for both, but no 65 mph zones.
    Basically just around town use.

What size of tire will you be running?

With that stall and cam etc. 4.62's would probably be required to get the top performance from your set up. Not a good daily driver thing though, 4.11 could work too but still this sounds more like a race only type combo and with street tires, will make large amounts of smoke when mashing the long flat pedal to the floor. Hope you are running a trans cooler too. Definately will launch you into the "g" forces from light to light with good tires, make them rpm's come up real quick and liquid fuel go bye bye real fast too. :D :D

I think the tire will be 27/28". I am also throwing the idea around about a 351w.
    Thanks

351 Windsor's are a good motor but take a little more work to get everthing just right in that small engine bay. I love my 408 and wouldn't change to anything else, I've notch my shock towers and life is much roomeeeer:D You can get some sweet horses from a 302 or 306 if you put together the right combo.
    Good luck.

If you dont do ANY highway driving ( 5 minutes or less) then 4.62 are fine .

My motor is built alittle more than yours, but I have the same stall. I also am running the 4.62 gears. I have never had it on the highway, but on the street 55 mph is about 3400 rpms. Like Old Guy said push the gas and there is smoke and then gone....hehe.

I have a very similar engine combo in my '73 Maverick. I have a Toploader 4 spd & a 3.55 Tractionloc. This seems to be the best streetable combination for me. If you are only dragracing your car, go with 4.11 to 4.30 gears & slicks. Any more than a 3.55 gear on the highway makes more noise, more vibration, and obviously worse gas mileage.

    Just one more opinion...
    Take it or leave it.

Just FYI, I drove my car from Asheville NC to Bristol TN last year with 4.56 gears and had no problems going 60 mph, just don't want to do it every weekend!!:D ;)
