Not to sound stupid or anything, but how do I get to the turn signal harness, flashers, and any other switch I need to get to in order to fix ALL turn signal components being out (fronts, backs, and dash)? Any detailed (how-to) information would be great. Im sure this is pretty basic, but there are a lot of things I havent tried to fix yet on my Mav. This just happens to be one of them. Thanks for all of your help as always!!
aside from the wires themselves, all you need is the switch (embedded in the collumn and looks kind of like a plastic crescent) and bulbs, maybe fuses. To replace the switch, (I assume you have the handle for the switch) you have to pull off the wheel and then just take the piece out and replace it and reconnect the collumn to the new switch. You can pull one from a junkyard pretty easy. other than that, just see if your bulbs are broken or if the fuses are burned. If anything still doesnt work, you have a short in the wires.
did you make sure that the plug on the back of the dash cluster was plugged in good? if it isnt seated right it will keep your flashers and dash lights from working right. also, is it the factory cluster? if someone switched it, it may be the wrong year. the printed circuits on that changed, and the wrong one would cause that to not match the plug.
Already checked and changed all fuses and bulbs... so that rules that out. I will change out the turn signal switch... almost no mavs down here in FL so I may just order a new one from the catalog. Im going to guess that everything electrical is factory. it doesnt look like anything has been touched in about... ooohhh.... 34 years! But just so I can check it out to make sure, wanna point me in the direction of that cluster? Thanks for all your help!
on the back of the instrument cluster(dashboard gauges) there is a push in plug. it is possible to yank it a little loose. when i pulled mine and put it back in i didnt quite have it seated enough and my blinkers wouldnt work. i just reached up under the dash and pushed it in more, but you may want to pull the cluster and make sure it is in good.there are two screws, one above each gauge. and there are clips holding it in, you have to push it up while pulling the top towards you. it will only come out so far if you leave the speedo cable attached. there is a clip that holds the cable in. while the cluster is out, you can also check the bulbs for the gauges and such. if that isnt it, then the actual blinker switch is under the steering wheel in the column
Similiar situation. Yesterday on the way home i pulled out of the driveway from work and noticed that both turn signal lights in the dash were lighting up as i applied the brake. This had never happened before. This morning i noticed that neither of my turn signals were lighting up when applied (outside and dash lights) and both signal lights (dash) are coming on when the brake is applied. Brake lights are fine. No Clicking sound either. perhaps this is the cars way of telling me something isn't right. Any ideas? Thank you, Sydney
I would start checking the grounds. I had a similar problem when I first got my '72 on the road. When I turned the headlights (or parking lights) on, the turn signal arrows in the gauge cluster were lighting and the sport lights were not. Turned out to be bad grounds to my front sport lights. At that point I took a piece of scotch brite and cleaned all the grounds in the entire car. Never had a problem since.
Decided to replace the Thermal flasher (552)/switcher box under the dash. $3.49 from napa autoparts. Did the trick. Thank you for your prompt reply. sydney
