I have a bare door that I need to put on, but with all the movement in the hinge bolts etc. I know this will be a major hassle to get it on straight. I originally thought I would hang it without all the hardware on it (no window, doorknob, locks, etc.) just because it weighs 1/3 as much, but then thought that when I start dropping screws in a hung door, it would be very difficult to retrieve said screws.

I know it will take two people, at least.

Any hints...something I can learn from others without having to go through the same hassles others have already suffered

scoop, dont you have a mechanics reach? the screws should all be ferrous. i say hang it with as little on as possible or offer a friend or two some incentive:drink: to help you hold it up while being aligned. Good luck. 69ina1/2, nice light mod(y)

I've hung them by myself using a Jack ... obviously the fender needs to be off for installation. You can get the door close to where it needs to be and then shut it. The door latch will hold the back of the door while you tighten and ajust the hinges. Then open the door and have somebody hold and and readjust until the latch catches with little effort and the gaps are correct. Put the gender back on and make sure everything lines up ...

no fender and no jack...i put two "paint sticks" in the bottom of the door jam. then sit the door on them and close it. the latch is my "other person". tighten the bolts and then open to see if all is well...(y)

I used to use the floor jack, but have found it much easier if I just take the fender off (VERY important, I curled my fender in the first time I hung a door because I hung it too far forward) and just set it in place and shut the door so the latch can hold it in place for you. From there you can adjust the height and in/out position. Of course, might not be a bad idea to first check the old door before you take it off to make sure the striker plate is in the right place... the ones on my Grabber were too low, I didn't figure it out unil I was re-hanging the new doors on it. Made a huge difference when I raised the strikers.

"Definitely" a lot easier to hang and align a door with the fender off.
