i have a pete/jackson "noisy"geardrive in my 302.when i first got it,it sounded great, but you could always hear a rattling sound at idle.took it out and i noticed that the two idler gears and the two plates that hold it together, were pretty flimsy/sloppy,so i a put in a couple of real thin machining spacers in between the idler bracket and gears to take up some of the play.the idler brackets, and gears are now snug(but still turnable by hand)and now there is no whine at all, just like a regular timing chain.i know that looking at the front of the engine the big idler gear goes on the left side,(thats the way i reassembled it)but is it possible that i may have flipped the idler gears the wrong way when i put it all back together?,and/or the machining shims are causing the quietness?there is no marks/stampings on the idler gears.thanks in advance to any help on this, chuck.

I thought it was the straight cut gears that make them whine.

not sure dennis, but ever since i put those machining bushings in,it sounds like i have a regular timing chain in there.not sure if i reversed the 2 idler gears by mistake, and if that would make a difference.

The idler gears are supposed to float sloppy.

Noisy drives are machined with straight gears.
    Quiet drives have angled gears.
The idler gears are supposed to go only one way, but forgot which way. (been 15 years since I put mine in)
A sweet sounding whine is normal.
    Clicking or rattling is not.

Is the drive hitting the timing cover at all?
My cover needed a tab cut back flush... I can see where the idler might make a rattle type sound if the tab wasn't totally flush.

I guess I don't understand the point of a gear drive. We have a 428 Cobra Jet in storage with one, but I don't understand what would make it better then a chain except maybe in an all out race application.

gear drive isn't hitting the timing cover.i also had to grind off the tab flush.the way the instructions go it says that looking at the engine the bigger of the two idler gears goes on the left side.this is the way i put them on,but when i fired it up it sounded sweet, but at idle it had rattling sound.gun it real good, and all you could hear was the whine.i'm just wondering if i flipped the gears over(front to back)on accident.

How does it affect the cam? I figured they were the way to go, if you don't mind the noise.

I have never heard that they affect the cam...

If you do mind the noise, they make them quiet nowadays.
There was a time that they only came in the 'noisy' flavor.

(Off topic), but blower whine comes from the air escaping from in between the blower belt and the pulley. You can drill small holes in the blower pulley to get rid of the whine if you wanted to. Ok back to the topic at hand.

I would still rather deal with a little...... chain stretch?!?

I didn't think it would affect the cam at all, but he said he heard something contrary, and I was asking what he had heard

Very interesting about the blower noise solution (the holes drilled in the pulley). BUT, I don't think THAT noise would bother me one bit :D
