I just bought a 1974 Maverick from nieghbor. It was always garaged and has 18,500 ORIGINAL miles on it. Should I modify it, such as cd player, stripes, rims, etc. or should I keep it original?
Paint is like showroom new. No rust. Vinyl seats are soft as leather. Engine runs great.

Welcome aboard...I have a 74 I just bought in very similar condition. The only thing I did to it was put a set of Magnum 500 wheels and BF Goodrich tires on it to dress it up. I really don't want to disturb anything else on it at this time. Sure would like to see some pics of your car sometime. Let us know if there's anything we can do.:)

    Good find!

My opinion would be that the car is never going to be very valuable, so I would go ahead and build it the way I want it.

Just think of the car as a step ahead of any well worn Mav that you might have gotten for a foundation. All the hard work on fixing rust and everyday worn parts is done... or not needed in this case.
If you had a more worn Mav, you would have all that to fix, PLUS making your own mods. Here all you need is just start modding straight out of the gate!

    If it were mine:
Small bumper conversion would be first...
    Then wheels and tires...
    Lastly, exhaust.
That would make a solid foundation for more in depth mods done over time.

    Good luck and welcome!
    Dave

    I agree 100% with Dave's recommendation ...

I did the same thing to my 1974 ....

Aubman, I have looked for 3 years for a good 74 maverick to replace my original 74 grabber that was stolen in 1975. I finally settled on a rust free 1972 302 3spd on the floor grabber to convert. Just found this site and realized that the bumpers, hood I tossed in the dumpster were worth something. I had advertised them locally and had no offers. Found a t-boned 77 4dr that had nice bumpers and hood, also will use the disc brake setup. Sure sounds like the car you found would have been a great car for me to have. Good luck with it.

Sounds like you would be a good candidate for a trade with someone that has a nice big bumper car and wants a small bumper, Grabber no less...

Do what you want to with it.Although the Mav/Comet have their own niche market,I don't think you'll be destroying a "rare, unmolested high $$ collectible".Most of the time, the right mods done right will make it more valuable anyway.

:Welcome: to the board.. sounds like a extremely nice unmolested Mav.. I think you should leave well enough alone and just change the tires and rims to make it look better cosmetically. With only 18000 miles ,not too much can go wrong if car was used and maintained well. Sounds like it was. This gives you time to ponder different changes and figure out what to do with this virgin car.. (y) TTFN RON

I'd say change everything. That would be like finding a completely unmolested low miles '84 2.3L NA mustang (don't want any SVO guys getting mad at me) in 10 years.

    V8
    5speed
    new wheels
    suspension rebuild
    new radio
    bumper conversion
    bucket seats
    etc.
    etc.
