Was pulling the C4 out of my '76 and went to pick it up, the front "shaft" came off along with the part that the bell housing fits over. I can't seem to get it back in right, it kind of wobbles, so I don't want to tighten down the bell housing bolts and mess something up. There some trick to getting it back in?

If it is the TC try pushing it back while turning....sometimes that helps

I think hes tlaking about the torque converter. The converter doesnt just slip on. It has 2 slits on it that are used for turning the transmission pump iside. When you put the torque converter on, you need to spin it several times while pushing it into the transmission, you will feel it slip another 1/4 inch in when it go's. If you dont do this you wont be able to get the transmission on without breaking the transmission housing or pump, not to mention its killer on your crank bearing.

the front shaft should slide back in to the transmission first. might have to turn it a little. the torque convertor needs to go in 2 notches. you should be able to feel it go in each time. if you have a hard time getting the bellhousing close to the engine, do not try to tighten the bolts. the tc is probably not all the way in.:)

No, not the torque converter, I can put those in in my sleep with my hands tied behind my back.

I'm talking about the round cast steel part that the bell housing fits over and it has the shaft in it that the torque converter fits on. I got it back in there as good as I could but when I put the bell housing on it wobbles like something inside the transmission isn't seating.

The shaft is called the "input shaft"

The cast housing is part of the internal pump

Im assuming your saying the shaft wobbles

I may be wrong but I didnt know that the C4's had a removable input shaft or at least I dont think they are supposed to come out from the front like that. I know C6's did.

I know what it's called, I'm just in a hurry right now. The whole damn thing wobbles, I can tell it's not seating for some reason. I went to pull the trans out from under the car and pick it up and like a dumbass I grabbed the input shaft and the whole front came out.

c4's have a removable input shaft. is it just the shaft that's loose? i just went out to the garage and pulled the input shaft out of one of my c4's. nothing else was loose. i put it back in, had to turn it and wiggle it a bit to get it all the way in.

Within the cast housing, the shaft is not loose. I put the whole assembly back in the front of the transmission and put the bell housing on, then I can move it around a little. I can tell that if I were to put the 8 or 9 bell housing bolts back in and tighten them, I would be putting something in a bind. Hard to explain. I can't turn the input shaft by hand, in or out of the transmission. I can turn the pump shaft with a pair of pliars.

If it was a C6 I wouldn't have the bell housing off. I've never drove the car, didn't have an engine when I got it, but the transmission was supposedly in great shape when the engine was pulled.

I'll try to get a pic...

    oh yeah.. duh... good point.

Good to know the C-4's come out like that. I do remember that the last one I did could be turned by hand.

You know I do remember that the shaft on my C-4 was cut weird, one side had longer splines. Any chance its in backwards?
