I would appreciate it if you could give it a look over for me. Could you take some pictures too. Also, could you check for: two holes about 1/2" in diameter in the horizontal sheetmetal behind the front grille where I had installed driving lights, a rear sway bar or at least the mounting holes and 4 or 6 screw holes along the transmission/driveshaft tunnel that were for the anchoring screws for a console that I had installed from a '69 Mustang. I am seriously thinking about getting my first car back. First I am looking at ebay and other sites for seats and other parts. I appreciate your help very much! Roger
You got rid of that car in '76? Thats amazing to find it again after 30 years. Man, what are the odds? Sounds to me like it was meant to be.
I'll be going to the local u-pick-it junkyards Monday afternoon and looking for some parts while I decide about buying it. A few weeks ago there was a Maverick and a '72 Mustang Grande - for the floor console. Surprisingly my wife, an non-car type, is supporting the idea of getting it. I am also thinking about going to Carlisle-Ford on Friday June 2 to see what I can find and WHAT I am getting into. If I get it y'all better be prepared for questions and part requests !! I have contacted the Doll's for their input as recommend above. Roger
Here is the link for all to find it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Fcgiurl%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fcgi.ebay.com%252Fws%252F%26fkr%3D1%26from%3DR8%26satitle%3D4641693534%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1&item=4641693534 WOW ROGER I have always wondered whatever became of some of my cars. I think this is quite a cool find for you. I don't see anything too bad to fix and think that you should buy the car. Even if you have to store it awhile before you have the funds to fix it up, or if it takes you 5 years to do the work a little at a time. Totally cool - good luck! Eric J
Great Story! I loved hearing about your finding your first car, Roger. Good luck in acquiring it again. The hood scoop is reproduced. It is the same scoop that was used on some Cougars and Mercury Cyclones in '68/'69. The stripe around the scoop we can help you with. Graphics Express makes a great looking repopped set of side stripes. There is very little repopped sheet metal as previously stated, but we can help you with that too. Let me know if you get it so that I can add your name to the Comet GT Registry under what I already have for that car. Seth redcometgt@aol.com
If you really want the car, DO IT. I bought back not only my first Grabber but it was also my very first car. I picked it up in December, 2005 and have not had much of a chance to start on it yet much beyond de-greasing and cleaning 30+ years of build up off of it. In this case, it will not be just another GT (sorry guys) but YOUR GT. While working on it, it might bring back some good memories. Mine has. Tony
The more I look at the car the more I plan on buying it. My only concern is the sheet metal repairs. I can handle the interior and electrical stuff and some of the engine issues. The sheet metal and painting is not one of my skills - I will diffinitely have someone do it that knows what they are doing. Roger
Roger, here is an idea. If you are near a Technical College that has an autobody shop. See if it has an adult program you could sign up for. Best case would be if you can work on your own car in the class. Supplied tools and teacher talent is a great way to lean it on the cheap cost of tuition. If they don't have an adult night school, you could check on having your car used for teaching, but that is risky if you are not there to watch what is all done to it. Just an idea.
I have decided not to purchase my old Comet GT. While I'd love to have it I don't have the knowledge, time and probably the money to restore the sheetmetal body. The interior and drivetrain I can probably handle but the sheetmetal is too much for me. With two children in college and two in school I don't believe I could get the Comet to the point that I would be happy with it. If anyone does purchase it I'll give you a copy of the invoice I got when I purchased it used - it was 9 months old when I purchased it. I have a copy of a Marti report and scans of some old pictures of the Comet I'll gladly give to the new owner if he/she wants them. It was really nice to see the Comet GT and dream that I would be driving it again. I even though about restoring it for my 10 year old to drive when he gets old enough. I guess I can finailly get rid of the Ford four barrel carb and intake from a Mustang I purchased for it back in 1973, but never installed. So much for dreams, we live in reality and reality pays the bills. I hope someone can restore it rather than it go to the junkyard. Thanks for your encouragement. Roger
