I have a nice 71 Comet GT 90% original other then motor/trans. I was thinking that I should rebuild the original motor and make it an all original 71 GT 302/ 3 speed manual. But now Im having second thoughts. It would be nice to build something with some power and just keep the original motor as a spare. What would you guys do given these 4 options. This is a weekend car, that I drive to work sometimes.

    1> Original #'s matching 302 2bbl
2> 302 (stock looking but really a 347 stock ported heads)
    3> 302 BOSS (cleveland heads)
    4> Windsor (351,408,427)

i voted for option 1, but with a disclaimer. keep the original manifold and heads in your garage, get the engine balanced and a good cam with better flowing heads and a 4 barrel setup. youll have better performance, you can even set it up to look stock. I had a stock four barrel manifold off another 302 with a single plane spacer, the stock air cleaner with a new label. you couldnt tell it wasnt stock, the smog shop in cali didnt even catch it. not as fast as it is now, but it was quicker than the 2 barrel and got better mileage. Unless that car is all original and damn nice, then putting it back stock is kind of pointless IMO. I voted 347.

You could build the stroker and still have it "look" totally stock under the hood. Not much point in going stock if the car isn't a daily driver.

If you aren't going to make it totally 100% stock. Any option but #1. If going with a true Boss 302 (solid lifters) you'll have adjusting to contend with (and the mess it can make in your engine compartment) I would go 347 looking stock

Sine it won't let me vote in the poll I'll voice it.

Go with the 347, or stroker 302 anyway. 331's are a nice route as the wrist pin isn't up into the oil ring like a 347.

come on you got to go windsor. i put a stock 351w in my car out of a 75 granada it was a pain but i'm really glad i did it. i can smoke the tires like no other with out even trying. next on my list is a new cam some roller rockers and a 4 brl intake and then i will be done with the motor for a few years.
