Just as the title implies, will it fit? Going to buy a parts car that the rear is gone, but the guy says he has a 1973 Mustang rear that is identical... any idea if it is?
If it doesn't cost you anything, you could grab it to sell or trade to a Mustang person. Otherwise, as Ray implied, it doesn't help your cause at all. Good luck Dave Edit: If you know what to look for, the Stangs were available with better gear ratios and traction-locks. The housing and axles don't help you, but the chunk can easily be pulled and used in about anything with the same type rear. Possibly even a Mav if the rear is 8". Also worth more dough to the right person if it has limited slip and good gear. Look at the tag on the rear: The line of numbers will have the gear ratio for starters. It will begin, most likely with a "3". Then, after the first number, it will have a large gap, then the last 2 numbers of the gear ratio. In that gap between the gear ratio, it can either have no digits, or an "L". If it has the letter, it is a limited slip (Trac-Loc, Posi, etc...).
Surpprisingly it does fit the maverick. That is the first rear end we put in Tammy's to get the offset right for the cobra R wheels. It is 3" wider than the stock maverick and the spring purches are within a 1/4" too. That's only 1/8 per side and your srings will move that far. It will look pretty funny if you don't get the right offset wheels
Well.... ...in that case, I may have a '71 Mach I rearend for sale-9 in. I don't know what ratio/open or posi it has. The tag is gone, and there is blue glue around the center section-so it could have been changed. I didn't know that the springs would line up. I knew it was wider. Seth
I know the perches line up too, however, are you sure you had a 71-3 Stang rear? The 67-70 is 3" wider overall. The 71-73 is 5" wider! You would have to use some really deep b/s to run that rear. More than I figured anyone would care to use. Roughly 6.5" b/s.
I've found this list to be pretty accurate. List also shows the 71-73 Mustang as having used both the wider 61.25 and the 59.25 ..... different models maybe ??? Year & Model Axle Length Notes 1965-1966 Mustang 57.25 inches 1967-1970 Mustang 59.25 inches 1971-1973 Mustang 61.25 inches 1977-1981 Versailles 58.50 inches 1967-1973 Mustang, Torino, Ranchero, Fairlane 59.25 inches to 61.25 inches 1957-1959 Ranchero and station wagon 57.25 inches 1966-1977 Bronco 58 inches 1977-1981 Granada/Versailles 58 inches 1967-1971 Comet, Cougar, Mustang, Fairlane 59.25 inches 1971-1973 Mustang 61.25 inches 1964 Falcon 58 inches 1967 Cougar 60 inches 1967 Fairlane 63.50 inches coil springs 1972 Ford Van 3/4 ton 68 inches 1973-1986 Ford Van 3/4 ton 65.25 inches 1957-1959 Ranchero and station wagon 57.25 inches (narrowest 9" housing) 1966-1977 Bronco 58 inches 5-on-5 1/2 inch diameter bolt circle 1967-1973 Torinos, Rancheros, Fairlanes 59.25 inches or 61.25 inches 1967-1971 Comets, Cougars, Fairlanes 59.25 inches 1975 Mustang II 8" 57.00 inches 1970-1977 Maverick 8" 56.50 inches
Hmm... 57 Ranchero looks mighty close. My grandpa has one sitting in his field. Was a NHRA drag racer in the 70's, so it probably has a decent gear in it. Hmmm!
rears I believe the 8 inch out of my 1964 Fairlane was around 57.25 or so... It is in much better shape than the one in my wifes Maverick, and also five lug, so we may use the axles/brakes out of that housing. Worst case scenario is I have to trim the axles slightly.
Are you thinking swapping axles to change a 4 lug to a 5 lug? If so, the bearings are different sizes. You will need to swap out the whole housing.
That list is okay, but I have found a couple of errors. The 71-2-3 Stangs use the 61" rear, not a 59". I like this site better for 9" info: http://www.ultrastang.com/Rearinfo.asp?Page_ID=1 This one uses housing width instead of axle flange width. You have to make the mental note which you are looking at. The only error I have seen so far in this list is the Granada vs Versialles widths. They are listed as the same, but the Versialles rear is actually about .75" wider. Dave
