I would like to learn how to tune up my own car. I was forced to let it sit for a while and now it is running like crap! But only when I drive it! I can sit in park all day long and gun the engine and it sounds fantastic. I have looked into some options like adjusting the mix on the carb. My distributor and plugs, wires and such all seem to be fine. The other day my brother-in-law advanced the timing a bit (says I'll get better performance). Can I just go out and buy a timing light and straighten this out myself? How do I get everything dialed in just right. I just want good street performance. I'll be happy to elaborate on engine details if that's nessesary to get the help I'm asking far.

Imo, it sounds like the gas is old. I would put fresh gas in the tank, change the fuel filter and the plugs. I dont how long the car sat but gas turns "varnish like" , and wil gum everything up pretty quick. Then I would put a light on it and see where the timing is at. Advancing the timing is not a fix all(y) . Just my $.02. Hope this helps ya.
