    I'd sell it and get a C4.

    Bigger, heavier, and more expensive to beef up. Not worth it in my book.

    No.

    FMX= iron case= super heavy
    Performance parts are expensive if you can find.

    Up until the early 90's the C4 was a throw-away trans and people would use a FMX or C6 when running bigger engines (same for the 9-inch over a 8-inch rear). Once some suppliers worked out the weaker points of the C4 the FMX fell out of favor. I run an FMX, but it was installed back in 1989. You can't get all the upgrades I have in mine anymore either. Like Dave said, "Performance parts are expensive if you can find". Given a choice between the C4 and FMX, you'd be best with a C4, period.
    But, if you want to stick with the FMX...

    1. You might need a longer drive shaft. The FMX is overall slightly shorter than a C4.

    2. You'll need an offset trans mount. The mount is, like you said, set back an inch or so further than the C4's. Ford used offset mounts in other cars. It was a long time ago, but I believe I used the parts from a 1969 Cougar (351/FMX car). It had the offset trans mount and I also used its 9-inch rear.

    3. The shifter... aftermarket shifters don't supply any brackets to hook the shifters up to a FMX. I fabricated mine and it was a pain to get it to work. I had to actually change the FMX linkage in the trans to get the proper orientation and drill a new hole, at the correct distance, so the detents in the shifter matched the detents in the trans (so P-R-N-D all matched up)

    4. C4 should sound like a better choice, huh? ;)
