May be a silly question but I haven't seen it answered here before. Doing the rearend swap on the 4-door and have everything removed except the emergency brake cables. There's a clip on the back side of where the cable enters the backing plate(see circled area in pic), with a number of small claws holding it in, but it doesn't seem to want to budge very easily (difficult to compress all the claws inward at the same time, they keep popping back out). Is this where I want to disconnect the cables, or is there somewhere else they can be removed that's going to cause me less grief?
You will have to depress them all to remove the cable. You can use a small hose clamp to compress them for removal. Or you can compress a few and pull the cable to the side this will hold the against the backing plate. Slowly work your way around until the cable comes out.
With The Last One I Swapped, I Cleared One Of The 'pins' At A Time Then Moved To The Next One But Being Careful Not To Let The Previous One Release. Like Jamie Said, P.i.t.a.
This is the best way to do it, hands down. Just make sure that when you do it this way that you do not put the hose clamp so far down that it contacts the backing plate. You will not get it out if you let it touch because now the clamp will be holding it there instead. Also, make darn sure you use a GOOD hose clamp to do this. Made in China = crappy clamp. Find a different one that is NOT one of the cheapies.
Man, you guys rock! The hose clamp trick worked like a charm. Of course I broke the first clamp I tried 'cause I overtightened it, so I had to "borrow" one from my fuel line, but that's my bad. Guess I better remember to put it back on the fuel line before I start the engine again... Anyhow, thanks a bunch!
The hose clamp thing works very good. One other way is to use a 9/16 deep well 6 pt socket. Just slip it over the cable end, align 3 of the flat spots on the socket, push the socket down on the tangs and it will come right out.
