Young Guy, First Car, First Maverick

I've been looking around here for a couple weeks and I like what I've been seeing from you guys. Seems like a pretty cool community so I figure I'll poke my head in.

I'm buying a 1977 Maverick from my cousin in a week or two and I'm looking forward to fixing it up and having some fun with my first car. It's 4 door, but I think it'll be fun.

I was just wondering about some tips you guys could give me. It's the 250 engine. And it's in dire nead of a paint job. I'll show you guys some pictures as soon as I can take them.


I was hoping you guys could help me put together a budget checklist of what would be the best modifications to make to this thing so I can get the most for my money. Remember, I'm pretty new to cars. My dad knows a ton about cars, but I'm starting fresh. Please forgive any stupid questions.

I'm pretty sure I'm already hooked on my Maverick. It's hard to save for my wedding when I'm wanting to buy parts.

*lol* Get used to it buddy. I just got a 73 Comet for what I consider a good deal, and she's literally all I think about right now. Problem is that I've got no money but decided to max my credit card out so I could have her, and have her running well enough. Now I just need to find myself another credit card to continue everything else.


As for tips, there are a ton of them available in the forum archives, you just gotta know what you want to do. Horsepower, a new set of headers and dual exhaust seems to be a major first for most. Make sure she's not too rusty, try to stop any cancer you might see on her body. Upgrade the engine, www.fordsix.com is a good one. www.classicinlines.com is similar and also good for L6 engines.

Would I be able to get the kind of power that'd make it fun to drive from the 6, or should I look at dropping in the 302?

I have someone that is talking about a straight trade for his 302 from whatever random vehicle he has.

 

I personally have a 302 that I'm going to be working on but there's no reason you can't get a sporty car with the 250. I'd do a search on the board for 250 mods or go to the aforementioned I6/L6 engine websites (www.fordsix.com and www.classicinlines.com ) for more informations. A major key is to reduce weight and allow better airflow, but that's the basic for most engines anyway. I don't know much about L6's but I've seen some pretty hot looking ones out there so just do a bit of research! For all I know you can make yourself a serious monster out of that.

Have fun with it, and ignore the people who talks trash about 4-doors (there's a couple of those around here unfortunately). They're just jealous because you have more doors than thay do. :evilsmile

 

I like the 4 door. Still looks sporty. Actually, I'm considering taking out the rear seat (kind of) and putting something useful back there. I'm sure I could think of something for the space.

Though, I may keep it for my freeloading friends. Maybe for the girlfriend too...

My first concern would be to check over the brakes, suspension, steering and stuff like that make sure the car is safe. The '77 250 is a real good 6 cylinder to start with as far as mods go, just got to get rid of all that emissions crap if your state allows. Then a cam, header, carb and stuff like that and you can have you a peppy little 6 cylinder.

4 doors are pretty cool. There have been tons of times I wished I had my 4 door on the road instead when trying to cram friends in my 2 door!
