Hi i have a I6 250 in my 76 Maverick and it seems to be running rich, i can smell the gas. Is this it and how do i adjust it? Tony
Adjust your idle mixture. That the screw front left. Turn the screw clockwise until the engine stutters than back off 1/2 to 1 turn. That should do it.
Take the air cleaner off this will help locating it. Looking at the front of the carb the screw is on the egr base that the carb sits on. Its at an angle towards the exhaust manifold. That should help.
If that doesn't work, it may be time to go through the carb. If the float is adjusted wrong or the needle is not seating correctly - it'll flood like crazy. I'm not sure whether you have found where the gas smell is coming from, but remember that fuel pumps can weep and/or put gas into the oil. Also, the gas tanks tend to rust and make small holes.
its coming from somewhere under the hood i tried that screw but never seemed to hear it shutter. Tony
Check the fuel pump and lines for leaks - just an idea. Also, those carbs are easy to rebuild and a kit costs about $20.
