Ok, here's what she does..... when cold, she'll idle a LITTLE fast, but when she gets warmed up, I let off the brakes just a hair, and the front wheels are held, but the back wheels quite literally dig trenches... I've capped off most of the airflow going to the carb (PCV valve inlet, etc) but it still acts like it gets too much air. I've adjusted the timing down a hair, and still, waaaaay too much to be safely driveable..... any ideas? It's a 2-barrel on top of a 302,
standard Motorcraft carb, electric choke (not hooked up,)

As an aside, when my cousin was screwing with the choke, the idle DID go down to a reasonable level...but when tightened up, it drifted right out....

    Any ideas?

Clue#1-choke not hooked up,Clue#2-"when my cousin was screwing with choke". Hook up choke and be sure it functions right.Check EGR valve.Do you have the right base plate gasket? Just my 2cents.

    1. Hook up the choke.

heh.... Final Action report here... turned out the $%$ing gasket for the carb (between the spacer plate and carb) was NOT the right one.... took an old one that was too thick, shaved it down, installed it, and got a nice "WHUMPA WHUMPA WHUMPA... "

Problem is now, the exhaust smells like gas..... any ideas?

Man, that gasket took a long time to change! :D

Gas smell in the exaust... You say it runs like "WHUMPA WHUMPA WHUMPA..." is that a smooth "WHUMPA WHUMPA WHUMPA..." or a rough shakey "WHUMPA WHUMPA WHUMPA..."? :biglaugh: (sorry, I'm haveing fun here) Seriously, sounds like it is running rich. Could be the needle in the carb is sticking open.
