Shorty Header test car needed in Cali!! I just spoke with a tech rep from Hedman Headers. I got more information on the shorty header for the Maverick/Comet. A question about fitment in a 3spd std V8 car brought on an option for a redesign if someone would be willing to let them use a stock or near stock V8 car for about a month. It's possible that the donor car owner would keep the original new header set, but no promises. Also, the timeframe may be nearer the summer time. I got the Product Manager's name and email address. If someone is interested, or if everyone is interested in a redesigned shorty header that would fit both std and auto tranny cars, send this guy an email informing him of our desire for an updated product. Jim Wical jimw@hedman.com Product Manager Hedman Headers Also mentioned was the 2 1/2 to 2 inch reducer that comes with the headers. They do have a new 2 1/2 to 2 1/2 inch 'reducer' that is non-restricting. The current new model of these headers is a ball and socket in place of the flat flange model. The ball and socket doesn't require a gasket. 2 1/2 to 2 1/2 ball and socket reducer - 21123 Just as a reminder - the 88406 and 88408 are the same style header except that the 88406 is the standard model with polished coating and the 88408 is the heavy duty model coated but not polished. Both are hot coated! http://www.hedman.com Hedman Street Hedders 12438 Putnam Street Whittier, CA 90602 TEL-(562) 921-0404
That is cool that the big companies are starting to listen to us Maverick owners Someone give him a car with GT40Ps on it and we can "kill two birds with one stone." But that might interfere with stock plug configurations
Sent this message to Jim. Jim, One of the members of aMaverick / Comet web site posted this message today. I just spoke with a tech rep from Hedman Headers. Jim Wical jimw@hedman.com Product Manager Hedman Headers I have a 1972 Maverick with a stock 302, power steering, C4 with a floor shifter that I would be happy to volunteer as a test mule for the development of a set of shorty headers. Also, there has been interest in a set of headers to fit this car equipped with gt40p heads. I would be willing to install a set of gt40p heads on another of my cars if you are interested in creating a set of headers that will work with that combination. If the same set could be made to work on both, that would be even better. If this would be of interest to you, I would be happy to arrange for my car to be delivered to your office and allowed to stay there as long as needed. I live in San Diego, so it would be easy to arrange. If you are interested, I can be reached at: Hope he's interested.
remember GT40 heads (if i can reacall here) have a differant sparkplug location then stock heads. to me is sounds like they are looking for a "stock maverick" not a maverick with aftermarket heads. to me they would make benifit more from a maverick with stock heads then aftermarket ones... cuz how many people have GT40 heads vs stock heads on their maverick just my
And a stock car is what I am offering. If there is enough interest, I would be willing to ALSO provide a stock car with GT40 heads. That is a BIG if and at Hedman's call. I also have a spare column shift steering column but do not have the linkage from the column to the C4. I would like to find this linkage so that they can make sure the product they develop will fit the widest variety of cars. Basically, I would be willing to provide pretty much whatever they ask for as I am looking to buy three sets of these headers soon and I don't want to buy a $400 set of headers that will have to be cut and modified before they will fit well. I have been reading about the 88408s. Seems most people have to make at least some modifications to make them work.
I though Hedman was here in GA ... I could have sworn I seen their place just around the corner from where I work in ALpharetta ....
I guess nothing ever came of this one... My Johnny come late remarks would be: Need to use a 3 speed column shift car, if the headers clear that linkage, it will fit any other Mav. To use an auto is useless to manual tranny guys, and from the sound of it, that is who they are aiming for. They realize if they fit the 3 speed, all the others will fall into place. 2.5" ball socket is a really cool upgrade to the current style. The old style hookups on shorties caused me to rule them out instantly in the past. My .02 Dave
I was considering using shorties until I found out what they do to performance capability. If you have a desk-top dyno program run it with good stuff even limiting the HP Peak RPM to 5500 with cam, manifold and carb selected for that RPM range. Run one test with shorties and then just change over to long tube or tri "Y" headers and look at the difference. You get a lot more power and torque from long tubes then you do from shorties. They just don't make horsepower.
Short primaries and collectors both shift power UP in the rpms (with equal primary diameter). Long tubes (and the longer collectors you get with LTs) make power in the low-mid rpm range (assuming a sane primary diameter). Not taking sides, just stating the obvious difference... Dave
Nope, nothing ever came of this from my side, and evidently no one else was able to get Hedman to work with us on it. Sorry guys. Seemed viable at the time. Maybe in the future.
