I would like to get some opinions on the options for rear frame rail repair. Am I correct in the assumption that pre-fabricated sections are not available as they are for Mustangs? Has anyone used a Mustang section? The critical area includes the rear anchor point for the leaf spring.
you could prolly buy some square tubing and make your own, not sure about mustangs, i would say they are close but i have no idea
You might get lucky and find a good doner car in the junkyard with a decent frame rail you can use. You would just need to find someone who will cut it out.
That's a common problem on these cars. Solution...Junkyard. That's about the only place you'll find them, unless you know someone who's backhalfed their Maverick or Comet. Then you could get the original frame rails for cheap. Mustang rails are shaped differently, IIRC.
Did you read his profile on the left,he's in Canada,no mav's or Comets in the junk yards here, and if you are lucky enough to find one chances are it will be junk too.Thats why we come to the south and drag all your nice clean rust free cars up here lol.Hey Dave are you going to finally start fixin up the Comet? Hope so i really like that car.Derek.
Derek, the frame repair is in the racecar; no work being done on the Comet yet. BTW, did you notice Joe DaSilva's supercharged Comet in the Auto Trader? He's asking a tidy sum for it at @ 23K!! Also on the race car subject, I won a nice voucher from Strange Eng at the CanAm series banquet - disc brakes in the new year
Probably be just as easy to go ahead and back half it. Get a set of the preformed frame rails from Jeg's or Summit and go with a ladder bar or four link with coilovers. Might cost a bit more, but then you'd have what you really want! :evilsmile
Did you say "might cost a bit more"? I think you're trying to add a couple zeros to my $75 budget!! Not to mention the fact that I'd need to graduate from Stock to Super Stock - bye bye 200" motor. Come on folks, is there no one who's tried a set of the Mustang rails? I think I'll get a set anyway; they're inexpensive and I will be using non-stock spring bushings anyway.
You could always buy some sheet metal, make some cardboard templates of the rail's shape, and weld together your own box frame.
Congats i heard you did good in the points this year:bananaman I just looked at Joe's Comet, man thats a nice car, kind of looks like yours.Me amd a few of the local boys are going to the track tomorrow, wish i could run the comet but have a vibration issue i'm still trying to figure out.Good luck with the frame rails.Derek.
I have some 69 Mustang replacement frame sections that came with a Comet I bought a few years ago, there not even close to the Maverick/Comet style. The guy bought them to fix his Comet, when he found out they wouldn't work, he sold the car for parts.
Maybe there's a difference between one Mustang version and another. I spoke with a fellow who's working on a '70 Maverick and he told me that he adapted a pair of rails intended to fit a '67 Mustang. I think this must be a more economical way of doing the repair, especially considering the fact that I'm not doing the work myself. I can deal with the powertrain stuff but I'm not a welder.
