I have a 351M which i am putting into my 77 maverick. Right now I just bought my engine stand, but I am stuck. The directions say I need a bellhousing in order to mount it on the stand. I dont have a bellhousing for it yet and can't find one. I was wondering if I could use any bellhousing or if I even need one.
Never seen an engine stand that uses a bell housing. Seems to me that puts a lot of weight hanging out even further than normal.
yup, every one I have ever seen just has adjustable arms that bolt to the back of the block (using the bellhousing bolt holes). Maybe they meant bellhousing area . your using a 351m? Thats going to be interesting, keep us posted.
I want to see him stuff that big assed hunk of cast iron into that poor car and get to the middle 2 plugs on each side.. then bolt manifolds up.. I smell a hillbilly fix coming (hot wrench for hire)
last i heard the 351M was too big to fit into a stock maverick engine bay. anyway good luck, i think NAFORD302 answered your question
351 and 400 M (modified) engines are a unique specimen. 1 351 cleveland 2v heads big chambers 2 came in trucks and cars (torinos t-birds anything bigger then a mustang/mav/grenadea sized chassis) good for holding the front of the car down where nature has repealed the laws of gravity. 3 has a unique block uses big block (429-460) style transmissions and motor mounts 4 boat anchors and 351-400m are often pictured in websters dictionary for weights 5 it's only saving grace is the original 408 351w based strokers used a 400 crank as a base (yes they fit but get the shoehorn and die grinder out) 6 never had anything bigger then a 2bbl carb and never had a manual transmission stapled to it's ample behind. 7 probably wont fit in a mav without a smoke wrench and a tubular front end conversion. hope this helps I hope it's a 351w (windsor) he might get it in there with headers (good luck) 351c (cleveland) bolts to the motor mounts but I dunno what you are going to do for exhaust without removing parts of the shock towers. I wish him luck on his shoehorning efforts
I agree mostly, but they DID come w/manual trans in trucks.Externally it's the same size as a Cleveland and I think Ratio411 put a Cleveland in a mav w/no shock tower mods.Biggest problem I've got with the 351/400m(and the FTE guys hate when I say this)is; almost as heavy as a 460 lack of gas mileage like a 360 almost as much power as a 2bbl 351w weak bottom end If you just gotta have a modified,at least go for the 400-might be sorta quick in a Mav.Just don't turn it over 4500 rpm.JMO
as for being the same externally as a 351c read what I said uses a 429-460 motor mounts 2. the blocks are a inch taller then the 351..(302 8.2/351c 9.2/351w 9.7/351-400m 10.7 or something) 3. and they never used a c-4 they use the 460 style tranny bellhousings as for a manual tranny personally I have never seen a 351/400m with a manual tranny but anything is possible
I've sen lots of manuals behind the M motor in trucks and Bronco's. It was always the big manual with the granny first gear.
They did have the c-4, which is a highly sought after bell housing! Thats what the 460 guys use to hook up a c 4. Been a lot of manual trannies hooked up to the 335 engines, trucks for sure. Never close your eyes or listen to ole hart bashing! The 400 is doing a lot these days. tmeyerinc.com will show you what a 400 will do! Makes a nice stroker, 434 stroker just pulled over 500 horse on dyno. Mine was dyno'd 390 plus horse! My 400 is the 400 featured on the web under 400 project. Torque out the ying-yang on these 351-400.
