I recently bought a 250 6 cyl w/tranny to replace my 200 in my 70 maverick. Poll Question: What engine setup should I go with? 1. Put in the 6 since I have everything basically for the swap, Build it up, turbo it etc... 2. Drop in a 2.3 turbo from an 85 thunderbird turbo coupe.
My .02 If you already have the 250 and on a budget(from your cardomain) you will most likely be better off with the 250. But if a 2.3 is available and you have the cash I think it would be a blast to build myself. I have seen a turbo coupe kill a stock 5.0 for the first few blocks but top end it wasn't a match. But like I said it would be a fun build.
If you have the 250 sitting there ready to go in, then drop that in. Then you can get the new aluminum head when it comes out and turbo it. I never figgured there was really that much of a diffrence between a stock 250 and a stock 200, acceleration wise. My brother and I raced from stop light to stop light, I was in my '69.5 with a 1971 200/C4 and 2.83:1 rear gear and he was in the '72 with a 1974 250/C4 with a shift kit and 2.79:1 rear gear. I put the engines in and tuned both cars. I got him off the line, but he down shifted and rolled into the gas and put a few car lengths on me easily, the 250 simply out powered the 200... 250 is definately the way to go. Racing 6 cylinder Mavericks from stop light to stoplight... gotta love it.
there are not enough built up 250's out there, it's cool to be difftrent ya know? scrub it down put some nice paint on it, chrome it up with a valve cover, air cleaner etc., nice header on the side, little 2bbl carb sitting on top feeding a bigger cam, shift kit for the tranny. that new aluminum head is probably the same price as all that stuff I listed put together, but if you can fit it into the bubget get it!
Been discussed a few times, along with the 3.8, 3.0, and 2.3 4 banger. The 3.0 seems like it would be the best swap to me, and would have considerably more horsepower then the 250. From what I have measured out in the junkyards, a 3.0 from a Ranger or Aerostar with manifolds off a Tempo would be the best fit. Manifolds from a Ranger or Aerostar will definately hit the shock towers. There are headers and stuff out there for them, weather they would fit a Maverick or not, who knows. The 2.3 would be cool also. The 3.8 or 4.0 would require shaveing the shock towers for the manifolds and sparkplug access. I would go with a 4.2 V6 from a truck over either of those though. The 4.2 is the hot swap in T-Birds and Mustangs that came with 3.8's.
stock 72.5 250 c4 3.00 gears 16.9 85mph not being able to use high gear due to a blown set of clutches..
personally I like the idea of the turbo motor from the t-bird it'll drop onto the v-8 frame mounts stick a t-5 and a 50hp nitrous kit on it for "lag" problems and run it 30+mpg 13 second street car.. the look on a hondas face.. priceless to use a bad clitche anyone have a 70 mav I can scrounge a turbo motor and 5 speed I bet..
I don't think he was talking about the 3.8 t bird ,more like the t bird turbo coupe with the 2.3 4cyl.
My old SVO with a modded 2.3 (Ported head, intake and exhaust manifold with big valves and a little bigger turbo cooled by a bigger Turbo Coupe intercooler.) Got about 27 MPG (Highway) with 4.10 gears in a 2990 LB car. It ran high 13s at 105 with 18-20 PSI. Slightly modded 5.0s would jump me out of the hole by a car or two then I'd run em down at the top. Sometimes I'd pass them at 3/4 track going 10 or more MPH faster. It was really funny. Turbos love high end power production. Especially when they are alittle too big for the motor. The mods did'nt cost that much. But my car came with that motor already in it. I did tart up the fuel with a few gallons of 100 octane unleadded when I cranked up the boost though. It would definitly be unique in a Maverick. I heard the 2.3 N/A engine was available in the Brazilian Mavs. I figured I'd share alittle of my 2.3T experiance with the class
Ohh, a 2.3 will ( ) definately be awesome in a Maverick. I'm working on it right now. Just takeing longer since I'm working 80 hours with overtime on top of it right now.
