I have a c6 and can't find any definitive answers as to all of what needs to be done to install the tranny, the engine I already have mounted, but I need to know if it's even worth my time to try and put the c6 in, if it means lots of tranny tunnel pounding or cutting.
    Thanks in advance

you should be able to fit it in,.... yeah, youll either need a b.f.h or a torch,.maybe both. youll have to make a tranny mount most likely, may be able to modify the one you have? it would probly be easier to just make a new one.I'll bet a dollar the next few replies will state something like,....more weight, takes more power to run, ect...:D ...all true, but since you said you have one all ready to go?.... and didnt mention your budget?....more work than its worth? possibly. your the one one that can answer that. good luck on it. I'd stick a c4 back in myself if thats what came out of it. but the c6 can work too.

back in 1980 on my 74 grabber i tried to fit a C6 in......wouldn't fit. went back to the C4
with a shift kit then to a toploader 4 speed.

My dad had a C6 completely rebuilt with all the goodies back in the late 80's for his '71 Comet. Would not fit. He sold it and made a $50 profit and got a built up C4 instead.

as a opinion on the c-6 you will need to remove the entire transmission tunnel from the firewall back to the front of the rear seats and widen the hole and rebuild all the cross members and build new mounts seat mounts re-enforce the floors and rebuild the tranny tunnel did you plan on using a 8 inch rear if so what about the e-brake.. and the brake lines and fuel lines...

it can be done but why ?

A C-6 is not even worth the hassle unless the car is strictly set up for racing and making SERIOUS power (like more than 500hp)...

Yeah, I'm helping a buddy rebuild his mav and I came into the project after the tranny had been bought. He's not so knowledgeable, and I'm not really a domestic kinda guy. But I figured I would ask, I can do the fabrication; what it really comes down to is time, the car is in his parents garage, and it has to be out by the 15th of January. The engine is done and in after fabricating some mounts. soit really comes down to this and seeing as this means hours upon hours of fabrication time as well as a new driveshaft, I'll see if I can't get him to reconsider and find himself a nice c-4 to use.

Well I have not tried to put one in a 70 (YET!!!!) But I did put one in a 71. All I had to do with the 71 was cut the entire crossmember bracing that goes all the way around the tunnel out and make a crossmember to mount it and it slid right in. I will soom try to mount a AOD in my 69 1/2 and have already started planning on how I am going to do that. I will probably just get a pre-fab tunnel and install it. I will make shure that I document every mod with pictures so everyone else here will have a idea on what to expect.

And yes, it was a little snug. you defenatly cant use the factory shifter. you need to go with a cable shifter of come kind.

    Hope this helps

    Don

Powerglide fits better than a C6...at least in my car ('75). I always ran a C4, then tried to fit an AOD in there (not without mods) and then tried a bare C6 case. Fits about as well as the AOD. Powerglide was a direct bolt-in with the right bellhousing and a home-made trans mount (don't ask...but it works great)

Yep, the C6 is for BIG cars and you would have to cut that Maverick nearly in half to make the C6 fit. C4's can be built to take over 1000 hp. With mostly stock parts they can easily take 600 HP. ( just a bit of tweakin' in all the right places. There really is no reason to put a C6 behind a 302 when the guys running 429's are putting out big money to put a C4 behind their engines.

    But that's a 2-speed, which is great for racing, but for a street-car, I'd much rather have a 3-speed automatic (C-4)...

The 70 crossmember tunnel area is a little smaller than the rest. I had a C6 in a 71, and in a 70, the 70 required notching the tunnel part out. But, you will be much happier with a C4, one car we had went from a 4 speed to a C6, lost a whole second in the 1/8! It was a 289 though....

The only vehicles that really need C6s are trucks & heavier cars. Now that better C4 parts are available there's no reason to put a C6 in a light, smallblock car.
