Hey guys, I've finally go the time to put my little brother's 72 2door together. Just a few questios though: 1. How do you tell what 6cyl you have again? 2. I need a head for it badly, any other years of cars that will swap? I've seen a lot of fairmonts in the junkyard with I6's in em'...........Or know where I can get a decent head....the one I have is way beyond repair. I just want somehting to throw on there so he can drive it while the 302 is built. 3. I'm building a 78' 302.......I've got the body mounts.....I have the motor mounts off of the 78' 302 but not sure if they will fit.....I don't mind buying new ones if thats the case. Also, I will be getting the different bell housing....Any body know the part number? 4. The tranny crossmemeber for the V8....the only advantage is so you can run dual exhaust? 5. Also, I have the rear end out of a wrecked GRabber, 5-lug....Just looking to convert the front end to 5-lug also.....what cars and what years? 6. Will a 2 barrel Holly be ok? 7. Any other parts I'm not thinking of here? Thanks guys.....I really appreciate this.
1 I can't tell you how to id the 170-200 apart but I can tell you that the 170-200 have a 5 bolt bellhousing to the tranny and the 250 is 6 bolts like a v-8 (on a 5 bolt tranny there is only 1 top bolt not 2) 2 far as I know the heads interchange but try and find a similar year head becuase the combustion chambers will be different from one engine to the next the newer the engine 3 head to schucks/kragen/checker/your local napa store/etc and buy the specific mounts (they are nearly identical to the early short mounts you would get for like a 289 in a galaxy) 4 yes. I think the later model crossmembers were all double humped 5 73 and later, any with a 250/302 (generally), 67-70 mustang, granada and it's clones, try and get the brake lines spindles (most important part) and any misc parts attatched to the spindles (metal hard lines not the soft ones.. those are cheap) also drum brake spindles can be used with disk brakes it requires a bracket to mount the calipers(stainless steel brakes I think sells the brackets) 6 2 bbl holley will work perfectly well and any speed shop carries tune up parts 7 frame horns for a v-8 mav, heavier springs (if a daily driver if it's a drag car leave the softer springs intact), bigger radiator, new hoses, belts, water pump, exhaust ? now would be a good time for headers, tranny v-8 bellhousing or small 6 5 bolt housing (find a c-4 from behind a v-8 in a boneyard and have it rebuilt if you have a small 6 tranny), you mentioned a 5 bolt rear end so a driveshaft, v-8s make a lot more power then a straight 6 maybe a stiffer set of leaf springs if it bounces under power, manual or power steering if power you need the v-8 brackets for the pump mounting hoses etc, anyone else think of anything ?
Easiest way is to look at the water pump. A 170/200 will have 3 bolts holding the water pump on, a 250 will have 4 bolts. All I6 heads from '70 and up will interchange without a problem. The newer the head you can find, the better, if you don't plan to rebuild it. [/quote] Any C4 bell housing from a 250/302/351 car will work fine. Like Scooter said, the motor mounts are available new at any auto parts store. Yea, it just provides extra room for dual exaust. Only V8 Mavericks/Comets had double humped cross members, regardless of model year. Waste of money if you ask me. Get a 250/302 bell housing and have your 6 cylinder trans rebuilt to V8 specs. The V8 drive shaft is the same as the 6 cylinder. You do not have to change the drive shaft when swapping from 4 to 5 lug, the original will work fine.
i have a single exhaust tranny mount and my dual exhaust fits fine.. you dont have to have it.. it just helps
Awesome guys, I got the motor and body mounts all lined up. I think I have the 170 or 200 I6, I will know deifniely tommorrow. If that's the case then a different tranny bellhousing will be in order for sure. What about the belly bar? I forgot to ask about that. Need it badly? I've already got a set of headers. I also have a set of grabber doors complete with tan interior that I'll be selling soon. Thanks guys.
