I haven't posted in a while. I've been busy with the 460 Maverick project. For those who are using a Mustang II rack, how did you connect the end of the steering column? I was planning to use Flaming river joints, but looks like the end of the steering column doesn't have a bearing support because it originally was supported by the old steering box. Do I have to use a different column or support the end with a bearing somehow? Thanks Mark
If he doesn't see your post you might PM Mavericknutt I know he did the same swap and could probably answer any question that you have on the steering
I bought a steering column kit...but I believe you can have a bushing made the fits the end of the column tube, then make a steering shaft with the U-joints & tubing.
In the Rod and Customs kit it came with a bearing to put in the colum. In my new car which I'm using a Jaguar front end I have a thunderbird colum that has a bearing at the end. Maybe you can make the Tbird work on yours. It's a 77-78 colum that has the bearing.
I had a complete Mustang II column to play with as well. I cut the outer tube of the Maverick column off square about 1" out of the firewall and installed the Mustang II column bearing on the end. Then I welded the u-joint from the Mustang II column about 2" lower. Used a Flaming River U joint with Mustang II splines on one end and 3/4 weld on the other. Really need to run a flex joint somewhere in the loop as well unless you are going to run front struts from a cage. The way I did mine - a GM telescope joint could be added between u joints if desired. Also, you don't have to limit yourself to Ford products to grab a column bearing. OD and ID have to match. There are only about 4 standard sizes and shapes of linkages on domestic cars. Grab a caliper and hit the bone yard to find what you need. I used a late 80's Camaro bearing on a early 90's ford van tilt column on a street rod project. OD and ID were what I needed. Parts-is-parts. Cleaver
Thanks for the help. I'm going to the junkyard later to see what I can find. I know where a Pinto is, I'm going to look at it. Thanks Mark
