I've been trying to get the parts together to do a brake job on my '71 Mav, but am not having much luck. When I phoned NAPA, they had to blow the dust off one of their old catalogs just to find a listing for a '71. They only found a part number for 10" shoes (mine are 9") and they don't carry any of the parts as regular stock. Canadian Tire carries only 10" shoes and the other parts I need (either wheel cylinders or rebuild kits for said wheel cylinders) are listed as not available. Partsource (which AFAIK is just Canadian Tire in disguise) can special order 9" shoes, but for some reason they're twice as expensive as 10" shoes, and they're not sure if they can order the other parts. I bought my Mav several years ago for sentimental reasons, because I had a '74 in high school, and only recently have had the time and money to start working on it. I don't want it to become a big lawn ornament but I expected parts to still be fairly commonly available. Maybe it's my geographical location (Saskatchewan), I don't know. Have any other Canadian Mav owners had similar problems, and if so, what's the solution?
When the power steering pump on my 74 Comet went, I couldn't find any place in town that could get one locally. Eventually they had to order one in from the States. So I guess you're not alone...
Guys; if all else fails, go to autokrafters.com and order a catalogue. They have all the parts you are looking for, they are just very proud of them, and they cost a bit more. But, you can get them. Give 'em a try! Earl
I have seen AutoKrafters web site and yes, they do have a lot of parts, however I'm trying to avoid things like excessive shipping and duty charges, and brokerage fees. It gets pricey ordering from across the border all the time. And what complicates things further in my case is that it seems like a lot of the parts for '71 Mav's from early on in that production year are slightly different from those that were produced later in the year, so to just ask for "x" part for a '71 Mav doesn't always work. They need to be compared to the part being replaced. So hypothetically, shipping parts back and forth a few times to get the right part gets even more costly.
Are these the front shoes? Because if so now would be the time to upgrade to front discs. A little more pricey now, but parts will be cheaper and easier to find later on.
Im from Montreal and have never had trouble replacing parts on my Maverick that were not Maverick specific. I sometimes had to wait a few days or call around, but never was stuck. There must be some local car clubs that deal with old fords that may be able to help you.
Charlie- Right now I need the parts for the rear because they've been locking up. However I do intend to change the front to disc when I have a chance to do so. Not sure yet whether to change to power brakes at that time or just leave them manual tho...
I have never had any problems finding any maverick parts. I would be glad to help you find some parts that you need. give me an email at patrick_isnt@hotmail.com and we shall see if i can find it. i live about an hour outside toronto, and shipping to other parts in canada is very reasonable. actually shipping prices to the US are also very good but for some reason shipping from the US to Canada is expensive. i just dont get it. also find out if the wheel cylinder from a 72 mav are interchangable with yours. i just parted out my 72 that had a whole pile of brand new parts on, aka wheel cylinders, pads, hard ware (the springs and what not). dont have the drums though, they went with the car.
Well, according to the information I have, the '72 should be the same, however I just tonight managed to track down the parts locally. I had to buy the entire wheel cylinders as opposed to kits, but got the cylinders more cheaply than I expected to. Out of curiosity, though, do you have any other parts that you were wanting to sell from the '72?
for brake parts in canada go to lord co and hav them call raybestose, they can get the aftermarket parts. lord co will say that the part is discontinued but raybestose will hav it. I had this problem with brake drums for my 74 that started this madness
i just went to napa online and put in 71 maverick. got 9x1 1/2", part #ts 353, $14.99 core charge $2.50, 10x1 3/4", #ts151, $13.99, core $2.50. dont know why they wouldn't have the same thing there in canada. there's also a couple of other brands of brake shoes in there catalog. i keep their site in my favorites because even if i go to autozone, checkers, pep boys or one of the others i have an idea of what's a good price. hope this helps.
I've had no problems getting parts here in Ontario. I bought a front cylinder for my race car last year. I sourced it from a local jobber who is a member of the Auto Parts Plus group. Can't remember the brand but it was #WC-36017.
